“…7), and the different d 18 O values with respect to carbonates from the source area, it has to be assumed that, in principle, the dolomites in this stage would be of primary origin. Moreover the textures observed are similar to those of the dolomites in Stage 3, that are now precipitating due to microbial mediation in the first few millimetres of the sediment (Corzo et al 2005). If this were the case, the homogeneity of the d 18 O values for the dolomite in Stage 2 might suggest that the oxygen isotopic composition of the lake water (d 18 O water ) did not undergo major changes with time.…”

“…The sedimentological and chemical features of the recent lake are similar to most modern Ca-Mg-carbonates-bearing lacustrine environments: shallow playas with saline waters and high Mg/Ca ratios and sulphate content (McKenzie 1981;Gunatilaka 1987;Gunatilaka et al 1987;Last 1990;Vasconcelos and McKenzie 1997;Chafetz et al 1999;Wright 1999;van Lith et al 2002). In fact, various studies in the lake (Comín et al 1990;Queralt et al 1997;Rodó et al 2002;Mayayo et al 2003;Corzo et al 2005) reveal that different carbonates are currently forming, even though, due to the scarcity of works documenting the genesis of these minerals in recent environments, the authigenesis of the CaMg carbonates (dolomite and magnesite) is of special interest. Comín et al (1990), who used X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of particulate suspended matter sampled from the lake, deduced that calcite, dolomite and magnesite are currently precipitating in the water column, and work by Corzo et al (2005) supports the mechanism of interstitial Ca-Mg carbonates precipitation through bacterial mediation in the modern sediments of the Gallocanta lake.…”

“…Linear calibration was performed by considering the well oxygenated overlying water in the flow chamber to represent 100% saturation of O 2 and the anoxic layer inside the sediment to represent 0% saturation. Sulphide and pH microelectrodes had a tip diameter similar to that of the oxygen microelectrodes and were used and calibrated as reported elsewhere (Kühl et al 1998, Corzo et al 2005a. Total sulphide (H 2 S) was calculated from dissolved sulphide and pH (Kühl et al 1998).…”

“…2). Los microelectrodos tenían un diámetro de punta de 20-30 µm y se calibraron y utilizaron tal y como se ha descrito en trabajos previos [25][26][27][28] . Para la calibración del electrodo de oxígeno se tomó como 0 de oxígeno agua residual estéril burbujeada con N 2 durante 5 min, mientras que el 100 % de saturación se tomó en agua residual estéril, previamente burbujeada con aire, durante otros 5 min.…”
