Carbon supported PdM (M = Fe, Co) electrocatalysts for formic acid oxidation. Influence of the Fe and Co precursors

Abstract: Pd and PdM (M = Fe and Co) nanostructured electrocatalysts were synthesized by the impregnation method and supported on carbon black Vulcan XC-72R for the formic acid oxidation reaction, FAOR, in acid medium. Nitrates or chlorides were used as Fe and Co precursors to study the counter ion role on the physicochemical features and electrochemical performance of the electrocatalysts. TEM analysis showed that PdM was deposited on the carbon material with a particle size around 2-3 nm. From XRD, peaks associated wi… Show more

“…As one of the platinum group metals, the development of palladium (Pd) catalysts has aroused great interest because they exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activities both in anode and in cathode reactions. [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] Recently, great efforts have been focused on tuning the composition structures of Pd-based catalysts by introducing foreign metals. [13,22] Various morphologies of Pd-based materials have been synthesized with special structures (eg.…”

“…Another efficient way is to select suitable support with large surface area and good electrical conductivity for loading metal catalysts. The metal-support interaction can strongly influence the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the metal catalysts [17]. Carbonaceous materials such as carbon blacks [18], carbon nanotubes [19] and graphene [20] are often used as catalyst supports.…”

“…Pd nanoparticles supported on OMCs purified with NaOH-ethanol (Pd/OMC-R2 and Pd/OMC-R5) exhibited a bimodal distribution for CO oxidation, with the first (I) and second peaks (II) centered around 0.2 V and 0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively. Other authors have also reported bimodal CO oxidation profiles on carbon-supported Pd nanoparticles [31][32][33]. In contrast, a single peak centered around 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl is observed for Pd/OMC-R5HF.…”
