Carbon stocks of above- and belowground tree biomass in Kibate Forest around Wonchi Crater Lake, Central Highland of Ethiopia

Abstract: Forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) balance, but their biomass has decreased globally mainly because of deforestation and a reduction in forest cover. However, little is known about the C stock of tree biomass related to environmental factors in the remnant forest patches. Thus, the present study aimed at assessing the status of C stocks of tree biomass using an allometric equation in Kibate Forest (Ethiopia). Sixty–six plots (30×30 m) were laid out at 100 m interval distance along the alti… Show more

“…The below-to-aboveground ratio or root-shoot ratio of 0.20, as prescribed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [29,30], was used to estimate the belowground biomass and carbon stock of bamboo for the study since there is no belowground biomass allometric equation for B. vulgaris from literature.…”

“…Most studies with biomass and carbon estimation of forest and other agricultural land uses in tropical Africa speci cally Ethiopia [4], [6], [8], [24], [27]- [29] uses one of the three allometric equations. More speci cally Chave 1 (Table 3) equation is very popular and easy for aboveground biomass estimation [2], [30]- [32].…”
