Carbon Relations of Flowering in a Semelparous Clonal Desert Perennial

Abstract: Agave deserti is a long—lived, semelparous perennial of the northwestern Sonoran Desert that flowers after °50—55 yr. Measurements of CO2 exchange over 24—h periods indicated that leaves of flowering rosettes had 24% more net CO2 uptake than leaves of adjacent nonflowering rosettes during the first month of inflorescence production. Net CO2 uptake for leaves of flowering rosettes was 32% less thereafter than for leaves of nonflowering rosettes, as senescing leaves of flowering rosettes exhibited dramatic reduc… Show more

“…Reserves are normally measured destructively, whereas measuring flowering behavior requires the plants to be undisturbed. There are few situations where plant reserves can be measured nondestructively in perennials, although this is possible with some monocarpic plants (Tissue and Nobel 1980). For some species of tree, ring widths can be measured even many years later, but this is a measure of vegetative growth or general climatic favorability (e.g., Tapper 1996) not of available stored reserves.…”

“…The continued oversupply and accumulation of carbon suggest that storage carbohydrates have an important ecological role. The following hypotheses have been proposed to account for the functional significance of storage: (1) support of vegetative regrowth following dormancy (Menke and Trlica 1981), (2) support of sexual or vegetative reproduction during the absence or shortage of photosynthesis (Tissue and Nobel 1990), (3) recovery from herbivory (Dankwerts 1993) and (4) survival during dormant periods and under shading (Wyka 1999).…”

“…The Century plant (Agave deserti) blooms and dies after about 50 y. 12 There is a rather famous claim that bamboo plants die in synchrony worldwide. Synchronous flowering and death is specific for this species, A. deserti.…”
