Carbon Paste Electrode Modified with Biochar for Sensitive Electrochemical Determination of Paraquat

Abstract: The present work reports for the first time the determination of paraquat (PQ2+) by Differential Pulse Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (DPAdSV) using a carbon paste electrode modified (CPME) with biochar obtained from castor oil cake at different temperatures (200–600 °C). The best voltammetric response was verified using biochar yielded at 400 °C (CPME‐BC400). Linear dynamic range (LDR) for PQ2+ concentrations between 3.0×10−8 and 1.0×10−6 mol L−1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 7.5×10−9 mol L−1 were verif… Show more

“…In less number, BC or nanoparticle decorated BC has been proposed in electroanalysis as a modifier for carbon paste electrodes for determination of traces of heavy metals lead , cadmium , copper , zinc and nickel by anodic stripping voltammetry. Moreover, the adsorptive ability of BC has been explored for the spontaneous pre‐concentration on the electrode surface and single determination of organic compounds such as paraquat and methil parathion by adsorptive stripping voltammetry.…”

“…analysis, where were found 280.4 and 396.2 m 2 g −1 for BC500 and BC900, respectively (Table S1). It is worth noticing that such BCs show remarkable surface areas and large pore diameter in comparison to BCs prepared from other biomass sources (Table S1).…”

“…A literatura relata que essa capacidade adsortiva do biocarvão pode ser potencialmente melhorada por meio de um processo de ativação, geralmente empregando agentes químicos (KALINKE et al, 2017;OLIVEIRA et al, 2017;LANG; (GEVAERD et al, 2016;KALINKE et al, 2016). As condições de leitura voltamétrica mais favoráveis para a intensificação do sinal analítico foi em meio eletrolítico de tampão BR pH 6,0.…”

“…14 Chemical activation is based on formation of functional groups at carbonaceous surface by use of chemical agents such as nitric acid, 15 sodium hydroxide, 16 hydrogen peroxide, 17 hydrochloric acid, 18 sulfuric acid, 19 potassium permanganate 20 and others as reported by several authors. 21,22 Besides of agricultural use of biochar, several papers [23][24][25][26] describing its use for construction of voltammetric sensors have been recently reported. These electroanalytical methods are based on spontaneous sorption ability of high functionalized biochar surface for organic and inorganic species.…”
