Carbon Neutrality Pathways Effects on Air Pollutant Emissions: The Portuguese Case

Abstract: Air pollution and climate change are closely interlinked, once both share common emission sources, which mainly arise from fuel combustion and industrial processes. Climate mitigation actions bring co-benefits on air quality and human health. However, specific solutions can provide negative trade-offs for one side. The Portuguese Carbon Neutrality Roadmap was developed to assess conceivable cost-effective pathways to achieve zero net carbon emissions by 2050. Assessing its impacts, on air pollutant emissions, … Show more

“…Many existing thermal power plants (TPPs) and CHPs throughout Europe have to face their advanced age, deteriorated efficiency and the strengthening pressure to lower their carbon footprint [7,8] both due to legislation [9] and growing carbon price [10,11]. On the contrary to radical solutions such as rapid shut down of coal power plants which is associated with immense costs [12], rehabilitation and repowering of the existing units to prolong their service, increase their efficiency and decrease the pollutants emissions appears more feasible [13,14].…”

“…The last step is to calculate the actual amount of natural gas consumed in the GT combustion chamber and the actual overall material balance of natural gas combustion. Power produced by the gas turbine, P el,ST , is calculated via Equation ( 8): (8) First and second steps of repowering option No. 2 calculation procedure are identical with those of option No.…”

“…In order to provide support for society's aim to reach climate carbon neutrality, it is necessary to further promote the collaborative governance of air pollution and strengthen regional scale monitoring and control [18]. Satellite remote sensing can provide regional and global air pollution monitoring and research data to provide evidence to policy makers to support air quality improvements.…”

“…Low-carbon development, a chief means to mitigate global warming, has led the world economic development trend. The excessive use of fossil energy has led to a continuous increase in global carbon emissions and environmental pollution (Zhou et al, 2019;Rajbhandari and Limmeechokchai, 2020;Monjardino et al, 2021). As the world's most enormous energy consumer and producer, China has increasing international pressure to control its rising greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment (Liu et al, 2017;.…”
