This study mainly examined the influences of enterprises' carbon reduction behaviors on their sustainable development, and investigated the effects on sustainable development of carbon emission reduction by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) from high-carbon-emission industries in China. Data were coded through a content analysis procedure, followed by regression analysis.Analysis of variance results revealed that SOEs and high-carbon-emission industries emphasize realizing carbon reduction more than do privately owned enterprises and non-high-carbon-emission industries, with significant between-groups differences observed between these enterprises and industries. Regression results indicated that carbon reduction positively and significantly influences corporate sustainable development, suggesting that carbon reduction is beneficial to both the ecological environment and corporate sustainable development. However, carbon reduction negatively yet insignificantly influences the sustainable development of SOEs in industries with high carbon emissions. The empirical findings may serve as a critical reference for China, which is moving toward a low-carbon economy.

Abstract:The Grain to Green Program (GTGP) and eco-environmental emigration have been employed to alleviate poverty and control rocky desertification in the Southwest China Karst region. Carbon sequestration and oxygen production (CSOP) is used to indicate major ecological changes, because they involve complex processes of material circulation and energy flow. Using remote sensing images and weather records, the spatiotemporal variation of CSOP was analyzed in a typical karst region of northwest Guangxi, China, during 2000-2010 to determine the effects of the Chinese government's ecological rehabilitation initiatives implemented in 1999. An increase with substantial annual change and a significant increase (20.94%, p < 0.05) in variation were found from 2000 to 2010. CSOP had a highly clustered distribution in 2010 and was correlated with precipitation and temperature (9.18% and 8.96%, respectively, p < 0.05). CSOP was significantly suppressed by human activities (p < 0.01, r =´0.102) but was consistent with the intensity of GTGP (43.80% positive). The power spectrum of CSOP was consistent with that of the gross domestic product. These results indicate that ecological services were improved by rocky desertification control in a typical karst region. The results may provide information to evaluate the efficiency of ecological reconstruction projects.

The method of reconstructing paleoatmospheric CO2 levels using carbon isotope signatures of organic matter buried in sediments has been questioned due to the dubious foundation that carbon isotope fractionation during phytoplankton photosynthesis (εp) is controlled primarily by aquatic CO2 concentration ([CO2(aq)]). Consequently, what carbon isotope data from bulk sedimentary organic matter reflects is a puzzle. In this study, we determined the carbon isotope compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon and particulate organic carbon in a lake located in a carbonate area. Partial correlation analysis was employed to distinguish between direct and indirect factors in controlling εp. The results show that εp is more closely, and more steadily related with pH than with [CO2(aq)], which is in accordance with recent advances in our understanding of the physiology of carbon utilization by phytoplankton for CO2 and HCO3−. Therefore, we propose that carbon isotope fractionation in phytoplankton is more suitable as a proxy of pH than of [CO2(aq)]. One advantage of this amendment is that information on HCO3−, the main species of carbon uptake by phytoplankton, is likewise included. In the future, culture experiments aiming at revealing the relationship between pH and cellular carbon isotope signatures is necessary to construct a new isotope fractionation formula to couple the different effects of CO2 and HCO3−, which is of critical importance to improve the understanding of carbon isotope fractionation, and to more precisely model pH and CO2.
