Particles with asymmetric morphology or surface chemical identity (Janus) are of great interest in the field of materials due to their special composition and structure. However, it is still a challenge to prepare particles with dual asymmetry via simple and convenient synthesis strategies. Herein, micron-sized dual-asymmetry Janus particles were prepared via photo-induced seeded swelling polymerization within 30 min. By controlling the polarity of the organic solvent (porogenic reagent), Janus particles with various morphologies were fabricated. The particles with convex surfaces, such as dumbbell-shaped, snowman-shaped, and golf-shaped morphologies, were obtained in the polar porogenic system, while the concave surface particles, such as bowl-shaped and ball-in-bowl, were acquired in the non-polar porogenic system. Mushroom-shaped and pinecone-shaped particles were generated in the binary porogenic system. Particularly, snowman-shaped, bowl-shaped, and pinecone-shaped particles were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy, exhibiting asymmetric chemical identity. They could be easily modified into amphiphilic solid surfactants for emulsifying oil–water incompatible mixtures with a definite interfacial orientation. This strategy provides a possibility for the simple and rapid preparation of dual Janus particles with asymmetric morphology and chemical identity, which are expected to be produced on a large scale.

Quantum dots nanomaterials have attracted extensive interest for fluorescence chemical sensors due their attributes, such as excellent optical characteristics, quantum size effects, interface effects, etc. Moreover, the fluorescence properties of quantum dots can be adjusted by changing their structure, size, morphology, composition, doping, and surface modification. In recent years, quantum dots nanomaterials have been considered the preferred sensing materials for the detection of heavy metal ions and pesticide residues by the interactions between quantum dots and various analytes, showing excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and interference, as well as reducing the cost of equipment compared with traditional measurement methods. In this review, the applications and sensing mechanisms of semiconductor quantum dots and carbon-based quantum dots are comprehensively discussed. The application of semiconductor quantum dots, carbon quantum dots, graphene quantum dots, and their nanocomposites that are utilized as fluorescence sensors are discussed in detailed, and the properties of various quantum dots for heavy metal ion and pesticide residue determination are also presented. The recent advances in and application perspectives regarding quantum dots and their composites are also summarized.

Detection and adsorption of florfenicol in milk using bifunctional carbon dot–doped molecularly imprinted polymers

Detection of florfenicol (FF) residues in animal‐derived foods, as one of the most widely used antibiotics, is critically important to food safety. The fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization technique with poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres, 4‐vinylpyridine, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and FF as the matrix, functional monomer, crosslinker, and template molecule, respectively. Meanwhile, N–S co‐doped carbon dot (CD) was synthesized with triammonium citrate and thiourea as precursors under microwave irradiation at 400 W for 2.5 min and then integrated into FF‐MIP to obtain CD@FF‐MIP. For comparison, non‐imprinted polymer (NIP) without FF was also prepared. The adsorption capacity of CD@FF‐MIP to FF reached 53.1 mg g−1, which was higher than that of FF‐MIP (34.7 mg g−1), whereas the adsorption capacity of NIP was only 17.3 mg g−1. The adsorption equilibrium of three materials was reached within 50 min. Particularly, CD@FF‐MIP exhibited an excellent fluorescence quenching response to FF in the concentration range of 3–50 µmol L−1. As a result, CD@FF‐MIP was successfully utilized to extract FF in milk samples, which were analyzed by high‐performance liquid chromatography. The standard recoveries were 95.8%–98.2%, and the relative standard deviation was 1.6%–4.2%. The method showed the advantages of simple operation, high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and low cost, and also demonstrated a great application prospect in food detection.
