International authorities are increasingly recognizing that utilizing the carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions from various industries can assist strategies for mitigating climate change. In developing novel carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies they aspire to contribute to circular economy targets and reduce consumption of fossil-based raw materials. However, the potential economic effects of CCU on industrial value chains remain unclear. Hence, this study investigates the economic expectations placed on those actors currently conducting research and development (R&D) in CCU. The aspired levels of economic performance are identified through a systematic literature review of 19 policy advice reports and 15 scientific papers. Qualitative directed content analysis is conducted, based on an R&D input-output-outcome system. First, we identify three relevant groups of value chain actors by clustering industrial sectors: (a) equipment manufacturers, (b) high-emitting producers, and (c) producers of materials and fuels. Then, we derive a criteria list from the review. Finally, the analysis reveals how CCU innovations are anticipated to impact different industries: Equipment manufacturers could contribute to economic growth. For highemitting producers, CCU provides one option for "surviving" sustainability transitions. Meanwhile, material and fuel producers need to act as "problem solvers" by offering competitive ways of utilizing CO 2. We conclude by identifying research gaps that should be addressed to better understand the economic and social dimensions of CCU and to increase the chances of such innovations contributing to broader sustainability transformations of industrial and energy systems. Modern standards of living are therefore closely connected to the availability of natural carbon resources such as wood, soil, coal, and oil. In order to conserve these resources for future generations and find more sustainable modes of consumption, an increasing amount of research is looking at ways of reusing and recycling raw materials. Often, such efforts are undertaken to close material loops in line with the vision of transitioning toward a circular economy. Redesigning value chains and reconsidering material use are key elements of this endeavor (Pérez-Fortes, Bocin-Dumitriu, & Tzimas, 2014b; World Economic Forum, 2014). Mineral carbonation (MC) is a form of carbon capture and storage that reacts CO2 with alkaline feedstock to securely store CO2 as solid carbonate minerals. To improve process economics and accelerate commercial deployment, research has increased around product utilization, where markets exist primarily in the construction industry. This review assesses the potential for advancing MC product utilization to decrease CO2 emissions toward neutral, or even negative, values. First, the literature surrounding the current state and challenges for indirect MC processes is reviewed, indicating that process intensification and scale‐up are important areas for further research. Alkalinity sources available for MC are examined, differentiating between those sourced from industrial processes and mining operations. Investigation of possible end uses of carbonate products reveals that further CO2 avoidance can be achieved by replacing conventional carbon‐intensive products. Companies that are currently commercializing MC processes are categorized based on the feed used and materials produced. An analysis of company process types indicates that up to 3 GtCO2 year–1 could be avoided globally. It is suggested that upcoming commercial efforts should focus on the carbonation of industrial wastes located near CO2 sources to produce precast concrete blocks. Carbonation of conventional concrete shows the highest potential for CO2 avoidance, but may face some market resistance. Carbonation of Mg silicates lacks sufficient market demand and requires the development of new high‐value products to overcome the expense of mining and feed preparation. It is suggested that research focus on enhanced understanding of magnesia cement chemistry and the development of flame‐retardant mineral fillers. © 2019 The Authors. The alkaline playas at Atlin, BC, provide a unique opportunity for studying the carbonate–bicarbonate system and carbonate mineral stability at the Earth's surface. In this study, dynamic closed chambers (DCCs) and pore‐gas sampling were used to directly quantify carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rates and characterize processes governing the CO2 exchange across the playa‐atmosphere interface. Data were collected at the Atlin site continuously over 27 days in 2020 and 14 days in 2021. Results indicate minimal net exchange of CO2 across the playa‐atmosphere interface during the monitoring periods, with average fluxes over the two periods of −0.03 and 0.09 µmol m−2 s−1 in 2020 and 2021, respectively. However, distinct diurnal oscillations of CO2 fluxes were measured with average daytime fluxes of 0.15 ± 0.34 µmol m−2 s−1 (2020) and 0.15 ± 0.19 µmol m−2 s−1 (2021) and nighttime fluxes of −0.24 ± 0.31 µmol m−2 s−1 (2020) and 0.04 ± 0.18 µmol m−2 s−1 (2021). These observations, supported by reactive transport modeling, indicate that CO2 exchange is predominantly governed by changes in CO2 solubility in alkaline porewater related to diurnal temperature fluctuations and variations in CO2 concentrations in ambient air above the ground surface. Even though CO2 concentrations exceed 8000 ppmv at 1‐m depth, CO2 emissions to the atmosphere were found to be minimal, likely due to high moisture contents, low connectivity, and tortuosity, limiting upward CO2 migration. These findings provide insights into CO2 flux dynamics in alkaline arid regions and show promise for the application of the DCC method for monitoring ex situ carbon mineralization at sites with enhanced mineral weathering.
