Carbon Dioxide Capture Using a CO2-Selective Facilitated Transport Membrane

Abstract: A novel CO 2 -selective membrane with the facilitated transport mechanism has been synthesized to capture CO 2 from the industrial gas mixtures, including flue gas. Both mobile and fixed amine carriers were incorporated into the cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) during the membrane synthesis. The membrane showed desirable CO 2 permeability (with a suitable effective thickness) and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity up to 170 °C. In the CO 2 capture experiments from a gas mixture with N 2 and H 2 , a permeate CO 2 dry … Show more

“…The two membrane categories have shown attracting performances for CO 2 /N 2 mixture. Recently, a permeability above 6 000 Barrer and a selectivity of about 500 has been reported for a membrane based on poly (allylamine) as a fixed carrier and 2-aminoisobutyric acid-potassium salt as a mobile carrier in a crosslinked PVA matrix (Huang et al, 2008). One peculiarity of FSCM and LM is to require water for the selective reaction towards CO 2 to take place; this constraint does not hold for the other membrane materials.…”

“…Works on gas separation applications using membranes composite with PAMAM dendrimer are limited. However, PAMAM dendrimer immobilized liquid membranes are reported by distinguished researchers [8,9]. In this research paper, we have been emphasized on gas separation behaviour of PAMAM dendrimer (G-0,G-1,G-2,G-3,G-4) composite solid membranes due to its stability and regeneration. The dendrimer composite membranes selectively permeated CO 2 because of the reaction between -NH 2 and CO 2 producing a carbamate ion and a protonated base [8].…”

Sarma et al [9] reported the performance of Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM G-0 ) dendrimer and ionic liquid composite membranes which provide a challenging way for CO 2 separation performances.…”
