Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the culprit causes of global climatic changes. Furthermore, the efficient separation of CO2 from other gaseous mixtures using ZIFs-based materials is vital for several processes such as flue gas separation, gas sweetening, and natural gas processing. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs)-based materials are emerging adsorbents and catalysts for CO2 gas removal via adsorption and conversion into valuable chemicals. ZIFs-based adsorbents with high adsorption/conversion efficiencies and tunable properties can be achieved by judicious synthesis and fabrication methods. We reviewed ZIF-based materials for CO2 removal via adsorption and catalysis (e.g., cycloaddition, carboxylation, hydrogenation, N-formylation, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis). In addition, recent development methods such as membrane synthesis and ways to improve the gas separation performance of ZIF membranes were highlighted. The prospective point of view to promote industrial applications and commercialization of ZIF-based materials was briefly discussed. Once challenges such as low performance and reproducibility for ZIFs-based materials are solved, scalability and cost-effectiveness should not become issues.

Activated carbons with different textural characteristic were derived by the chemical activation of raw beet molasses with solid KOH, while the activation temperature was changed in the range 650 °C to 800 °C. The adsorption of CO2 on activated carbons was investigated. Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, Toth, Unilan, Fritz-Schlunder, Radke-Prausnitz, Temkin-Pyzhev, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Jovanovich equations were selected to fit the experimental data of CO2 adsorption. An error analysis (the sum of the squares of errors, the hybrid fractional error function, the average relative error, the Marquardt’s percent standard deviation, and the sum of the absolute errors) was conducted to examine the effect of using various error standards for the isotherm model parameter calculation. The best fit was observed to the Radke-Prausnitz model.

The coconut shell-based activated carbon (AC) surface was effectively anchored with amine moieties with acid treatment followed by tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) anchoring. The activated carbon surface enhanced with basicity is likely to increase the sorbent properties towards CO 2 adsorption. The AC surface was modified by varying TEPA concentrations. After amine doping, significant loss in textural property indicates their occupation inside the pores and surfaces. Further, the samples were thermally activated to retrieve the textural properties. The physicochemical properties of modified carbon were characterized using BET, TPD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy and elemental composition. The amine-modified and thermally activated carbons were tested for CO 2 adsorption up to 25 bar at 25°C. The acid-base properties of N-doped carbons were evaluated using isopropanol as a model test reaction at atmospheric pressure. The IPA reaction products of acetone and propene were quantified for their acid-base nature and correlated to CO 2 adsorption capacities. The CO 2 adsorption capacity increases by tailoring synergistic properties between surface basicity and micropores. Hence, 20 % TEPA-derived nitrogen-enriched carbon reveals a higher yield of acetone 73 %, which in turn enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity of 9.9 mmol/g, and it is found to be a suitable applicant for CO 2 capture.
