Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage as a Defense Tool against Climate Change: Current Developments in West Macedonia (Greece)

Abstract: In West Macedonia (Greece), CO2 accounts as one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions related to the activity of the regional coal power plants located in Ptolemaida. The necessity to mitigate CO2 emissions to prevent climate change under the Paris Agreement's framework remains an ongoing and demanding challenge. It requires implementing crucial environmentally sustainable technologies to provide balanced solutions between the short-term needs for dependency on fossil fuels and the requiremen… Show more

“…38 Geological storage CCS usually consists of four stages: capturing, compression, transportation and injection. 39,40 The depleted oil reservoirs, coal beds or deep saline aquifers, [41][42][43] and in situ mineralization in basalts 44,45 are used for geological CO 2 storage. It is estimated that oil and gas reservoirs as well as saline aquifers have adequate capacity to store anthropogenic CO 2 for two centuries.…”

“…Although the Pentalofos and Eptahori formations are considered as reservoirs and the overlying Tsotyli formation as a seal rock based on their characteristics [16], important downsides do exist. According to [17] these reservoir formations are turbidite fan delta deposits, with a net to gross (N/G) reaching 40% [18]. Top-sealed by Tsotyli formation (Figure 2) and juxtaposed by the Pelagonian basement to the East, the storage potential focus should be given there.…”

“…Since green and clean energy sources have become the foundation, some oil and gas companies are transitioning from the oil and gas business to the energy business by modifying or expanding their business scope [10]. Some of them alter their vision and mission to the extent that they rebrand their companies [11]. When a corporation expanded its commercial scope, the competency and capability of its personnel became crucial to manage [12].…”
