Carbon Building Materials from Coal Char: Durable Materials for Solid Carbon Sequestration to Enable Hydrogen Production by Coal Pyrolysis

Abstract: The pyrolysis of coal can produce hydrogen-rich gases for clean fuel. It also produces cokelike coal char. Rather than using the coal char as a fuel, it could provide the basis for carbon building materials that sequester the carbon in the solid state while performing an essential function. Data is presented on the properties of prototype of coal-char based solid carbons, which is stronger and lighter than conventional fired clay or concrete masonry.
