Carbofuran removal in continuous-photocatalytic reactor: Reactor optimization, rate-constant determination and carbofuran degradation pathway analysis

Abstract: Carbofuran (CBF) removal in a continuous-flow photocatalytic reactor with granular activated carbon supported titanium dioxide (GAC-TiO) catalyst was investigated. The effects of feed flow rate, TiO concentration and addition of supplementary oxidants on CBF removal were investigated. The central composite design (CCD) was used to design the experiments and to estimate the effects of feed flow rate and TiO concentration on CBF removal. The outcome of CCD experiments demonstrated that reactor performance was in… Show more

“…Carbofuran has become one of the dominant insecticides used in agriculture due to its ability to control a wide range of pests [ 6 ]. However, carbofuran is known as a powerful inhibitor of acetyl-cholinesterase and possesses serious toxicity, producing negative health effects for wild animals and humans and poisoning rivers and groundwater [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. In addition, the application of carbofuran to crops results in changes in the metabolism of plants and changes the soil microbiota and their metabolites [ 10 ], which ultimately affects crop quality [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”
