Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Czech Republic in 2011

Abstract: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas spp. are increasingly reported in many countries all over the world. Due to the resistance of those bacteria to almost all antibiotics (e.g. beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones), treatment options are seriously limited. In the Czech Republic, the incidence of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae seems to be low, restricted to only three cases detected between 2009 and 2010. Here, we describe molecular typing of 15 carbapenemase-produc… Show more

“…This is not surprising as Ghana has no formal ABR surveillance system as occurs in all other countries in the World Health Organisation (WHO) African region. [37] It is important that a national or regional ABR surveillance system such as European Center for Diseases Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network [38, 39] be established to regularly update and disseminate ABR data to all health workers through effective platforms such as email or other electronic alerts, news bulletins, or through memos to all health facilities.…”

“…However, a minor cluster in the PFGE profile, PT6, including four isolates with sequencing type ST512 and ST258, were detected ( Fig 1 ). ST258 is a major KPC-producing clone throughout the world [ 22 24 ] and ST512 is the predominant clone primarily carrying the bla KPC-3 gene [ 25 , 26 ]. This is the first report of ST512 and ST258 KPC-2 KPs identified in Taiwan, and the four cases with ST258 and ST512 isolates did not have a history of travel outside of the country.…”

“…Clonal spread of the VIM‐carrying ST‐147 strains with IncF and IncA/C plasmids was shown to occur within and between hospitals, and even between countries (Greece, Italy, and Scandinavia) . In a report from the Czech Republic, 5 of 6 VIM‐producing K. pneumoniae isolates belonged to ST‐11 …”
