Abstract: Terminal drought is a worldwide constraint to common bean production and its negative effects will be increased by climate change. The objective of this research was to characterize phenotypically advanced lines and commercial cultivars of common bean for their resistance to terminal drought stress. Field trials were conducted during 2012 and 2013 at Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Palmira, Colombia. A 4x4 partially balanced lattice design with four replicates was used and, evaluated under… Show more

“…Although some of the elite lines in this study did not perform well in the low N soil at Isabela, Puerto Rico, they possess traits that may be useful as parents to develop cultivars for CAC. For example, the small red line SER 118 has yielded well and expressed greater yield efficiency in soils in Colombia having moderate levels of low P stress (Beebe et al, 2008) and terminal drought (Chaves-Barrantes et al, 2018). SEF 16 has resistance to BGYMV and has performed well in terminal drought and greater than optimum night temperatures (Chaves-Barrantes, 2015).…”

“…Interestingly, both GGRs were earlier to flower; therefore, the reduction in PV values in these lines might have resulted from the earlier effects of high temperature on anther indehiscence [50], degeneration of the tapetum layer and a decrease in pollen production [51]. Earliness allowed these lines to improve heat tolerance through different avoidance mechanisms [48] such as CB accumulation combined with earlier flowering, as well as increased mobilization of photoassimilates towards grain formation, resulting in better yield mainly due to high SNA values [11,54].…”
