ABSTRACT.A poor nutritional state may explain the low fertility rates of domestic camelids from Puna herds. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the nutritional state of alpacas before the breeding period and their reproductive success. The body live weight (BLW) and body condition score (BCS; scale from 1-5) of 35 non-pregnant non-lactating alpacas from the Caquena bofedal in Chile were registered previous to the breeding period. In addition, blood samples were collected (heparinised tubes) to determine the plasma concentration of cholesterol (CHOD-PAP method), triglycerides (GPO-PAP method) and NEFA (enzymatic colorimetric method). Pregnancy was determined by trans-rectal ultrasonography (7.5 MHz, Samsung Madison, Korea) at the end of the breeding period. Data from Pregnant and Non-Pregnant groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U test (SPSS programme; P< 0.05). Pregnant (n=20) and Non-pregnant groups (n=15) had similar BLW (47.1 ± 8.8 compared to 52.8 ± 11.1 kg, respectively; P = 0.9), BCS (3.0 ± 0.4 compared to 3.1 ± 0.4, respectively; P = 0.5), plasma cholesterol (1.0 ± 0.4 compared to 0.9 ± 0.3 mmol/l, respectively; P=0.7), triglycerides (0.3 ± 0.1 compared to 0.4 ± 0.1 mmol/l, respectively; P = 0.3), and NEFA (0.6 ± 0.4 compared to 0.8 ± 0.6 mmol/l, respectively; P = 0.1) before the breeding period. NEFA values of both groups showed evidence of negative energy balance. The nutritional state of alpacas before the breeding period did not explain the differences obtained in their reproductive success.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue estimar el efecto materno aditivo y permanente, edad, sexo y año de la campaña sobre los pesos al nacimiento, destete y primera esquila y peso de vellón en alpacas Huacaya del Centro de Investigación y Producción La Raya, en Puno, Perú, a una altitud entre 4100 y 5000 msnm. Se evaluaron 1494 crías esquiladas correspondientes a dos periodos de campaña. Las características productivas fueron sometidas a un modelo mixto, donde se incluyó como efectos fijos a la campaña y el sexo de la cría ajustado con su edad al destete y primera esquila. Los efectos aleatorios fueron valor genético aditivo materno y edad de la madre como efecto materno permanente. Los componentes de variancia se estimaron por la Máxima Verosimilitud Restringida (REML). La edad promedio de las alpacas tuis al destete fue 240.1 ± 0.3 días, mientras que la edad a la primera esquila fue 278.7 ± 0.3 días, durante el cual tuvieron un crecimiento lineal de 0.11-0.12 kg de incremento de peso vivo. La heredabilidad materna fue 0.32 ± 0.058, 0.49 ± 0.050, 0.39 ± 0.056 y 0.19 ± 0.064 para los pesos al nacimiento, destete y primera esquila y peso de vellón, respectivamente. La campaña tuvo influencia sobre las características productivas evaluadas, mientras que el sexo de la cría fue preponderante solo al destete, siendo las hembras las de mejor rendimiento. Los efectos genéticos aditivos y permanentes maternos fueron más preponderantes en peso vivo del animal en comparación a su peso de vellón.

The yearly time course of body weight and body condition was evaluated in female llamas and alpacas. One hundred and twenty lactating females, 60 llamas, and 60 alpacas maintained grazing natural pastures were assessed monthly for body weight and body condition. Body weight was registered using a scale to the nearest 1 kg. Body condition was evaluated behind the shoulder, and dorsal protrusion of the thoracic vertebrae was detected. Body weight was analyzed using analysis of variance and body condition using the Chi-square test. Body weight, kg, was different (P≤ 0.05) by species and breeds, 97.6 and 56.2 for llama and alpaca, respectively. Chaku llamas, 94.3; Kcara llamas, 100.9, Huacaya alpacas 56.3, and Suri alpacas 55.9 kg. Body condition varied significantly (P≤ 0.05) between llamas and alpacas. Twelve percent of animals presented good body condition compared to 46% of regular and 42% with poor body condition. More llamas and alpacas were in good body condition, and 82 animals, during the rainy season, December, were also pregnant, more than 15 females with poor body condition and nonpregnant during the same period. Body weight and body condition improved during the rainy than the dry season.
