Mexico harbors over 50% of maize’s genetic diversity in the Americas. Native maize varieties are actively managed by small-scale producers within a diverse array of cultivation systems. Seed lot use, exchange and admixture has consequences for the in situ conservation of such varieties. Here we analyze native maize seed management dynamics from 906 small-scale producers surveyed in three Mexican states: Mexico City, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Furthermore, we analyze how their management practices can relate to transgene presence, which was experimentally documented for maize samples associated with the applied surveys. Through a data mining approach, we investigated which practices might be related with a higher probability of transgene presence. The variables found to have a strong spatial association with transgene presence were: for Mexico City, maize producers with larger parcels; for Oaxaca, producer’s age (43–46 years) and the sale of seed; for Chiapas, the use of agricultural machinery and younger producers (37–43 years). Additionally, transgene presence and frequency within the socioeconomic regions of Oaxaca and Chiapas was analyzed. In Oaxaca, higher transgene frequencies occurred in regions where transgene presence had been previously reported. In Chiapas, the border regions with Guatemala as well as a region where reproduction of improved seed takes place, the highest proportion of positive samples were found. A detailed mapping of regional seed markets and seed exchange sites together with deployment of national and local biosecurity measures, could help prevent the further spread of transgenes into native maize varieties, as well as improve conservation efforts.

Cattle ranches in Mexico have demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to changing economic, environmental, and social conditions. In a context where traditional cattle ranches were being replaced by conventional technologies, diversification has become a fundamental strategy to ensure their sustainability and resilience. The term “ranch” used to encompass various agribusiness units with different forms of ownership and management. However, today, a conventional cattle ranch is characterized by its focus on the core activity of grazing. The central objective of the article was to analyze the evolution of cattle ranches in Mexico, focusing on how diversification became a fundamental strategy to address challenges over time and adapt to changing economic, environmental, and social conditions. To achieve this, a bibliographic search and comprehensive analysis of the state of the art related to the organizational structure of cattle ranches were conducted. This process provided the necessary theoretical foundations for the conceptualization of cattle ranches based on their structure, diversity of functions, products, and activities. Ultimately, it was concluded that the evolution of cattle ranches in Mexico reflected their continuous adaptation to changing economic, environmental, and social conditions, with diversification being a key strategy to ensure the sustainability and resilience of livestock farms.

Background: Agroecosystems (AE) have different technological, productive, economic and socio-cultural characteristics; therefore, it is important to characterize them to offer information for the design of focused agricultural policies, and that promote the development of the region. Objective: Characterize the AE with native maize in Tezonapa, Veracruz, based on socio-cultural, technical-productive, economic and environmental factors. Methodology: The study was carried out using the survey technique by the non-probabilistic snowball method. Ninety-seven native maize producers were surveyed in 29 Tezonapa communities in 2020. The questionnaire was semi-structured with 53 questions in five sections, including producer data, as well as socio-cultural, technical-productive, environmental and economic. The data obtained from the questionnaires were captured in the Microsoft Office Excel® 2019 computer program, subsequently, a principal component analysis (PCA), descriptive statistics and a dendrogram were executed. For the typology of maize production systems, the 53 original variables were used, generating a dendrogram. Results: Two types of AE were found: Traditional (T) and Traditional Subsistence (TS) with differentiated technical-productive, socio-cultural, economic and environmental characteristics. According to the PCA, the most significant variables in the description of the AEs were two sociodemographic, five technical-productive, and three economic. Implications: The producers of Tezonapa must organize themselves for the management of innovations that impact the yield of native maize crop, but taking into account their knowledge about sustainable agricultural practices. Conclusions: The AEs studied, although they present technical-productive and economic limitations, also have benefits when providing food, generating and exchanging empirical knowledge, which has allowed the conservation of native maize, and said valuable knowledge must be rescued and promoted.
