Abstract

The morphometric characterization of a hydrographic basin is a useful knowledge for the planning and management of water resources, since there is a close relationship between the physical characteristics of a basin and its hydrological regime. Obtaining these characteristics can be performed effectively using Digital Elevation Models (DEM's) in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. Thus, this study sought to analyze, using geoprocessing technology, the morphometric characteristics of the Jaboatão river basin, in Pernambuco. For this, DEM's from a LiDAR sensor were used, which were manipulated in UTM coordinates (zone 25 S) in the Geocentric Reference System for the Americas (SIRGAS 2000) through the free software QGIS (version 3.10.9), where they were submitted to techniques of pre-processing, such as, reprojection and elimination of negative and spurious pixels, so that it was possible to carry out the delimitation of the basin and the extraction of the hydrographic network. From these techniques, it was possible to obtain the geometric, hydrographic and relief characteristics of the studied region, which allowed us to verify that the Jaboatão river basin has a low propensity to floods, in medium precipitation conditions, elongated shape, comprising a regular drainage system, its main river is very winding and has low altitudes, ranging from 0.00 to 438.00 m, characterized as an area consisting of plains and hills. Through the results obtained, the use of GIS stands out as a viable and agile alternative to assist in the management of the basin and promote adequate environmental planning. Assim, este estudo buscou analisar, a partir da tecnologia do geoprocessamento, as características morfométricas da bacia hidrográfica do rio Jaboatão, em Pernambuco.
