“…The esophagus of E. imbricata hatchlings presented similar shape and topographical relationships to findings already described for other sea turtle species such as C. mydas (Magalhães et al, 2010, 2012; Chen et al, 2015; Calais Junior et al, 2016), L. olivacea , and Caretta caretta (Magalhães et al, 2012). However, Magalhães et al (2012), report the presence of an exceptionally long esophagus in proportion to the curvilinear length of the carapace in Dermochelys coriacea , extending for almost half the length of the body, only then turning to the left and joining the stomach.…”

“…The E. imbricata hatchlings analyzed herein present conical, pointed, and cornified papillae covering the entire esophagus, oriented towards the stomach. This characteristic is unique to sea turtles and has been described for both hatchlings and adults of all other sea turtle species (Wyneken, 2004; Magalhães et al, 2010, 2012; Chen et al, 2015; Calais Junior et al, 2016). Another striking feature observed in the esophagus is a developed muscle tunic, mainly in the esophagus-cardia transition.…”
