The role of avian frugivores on germination and potential seed dispersal of the Brazilian Pepper Schinus terebinthifolius. Biota Neotrop. 10(3): http:// www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v10n3/en/abstract?article+bn00910032010.Abstract: Frugivorous birds play a key role in seed dispersal and establishment of a range of plant species, including invasive weeds, such as the Brazilian Pepper Schinus terebinthifolius. The potential of seed dispersal of Schinus by birds with varied feeding behaviours was studied through seed-viability tests and germination experiments using seeds obtained from birds in the field and birds kept in captivity. It was found that seeds collected after gut passage in five bird species in the field had higher proportion of germination as well as higher germination rates compared to the control seeds. Viability of seeds ingested by the Blue-and-yellow Tanager Thraupis bonariensis, which mandibulates seeds before ingesting, was significantly lower than control seeds, while reduction in viability of seeds ingested by the Creamy-bellied Thrush Turdus amaurochalinus was nonsignificant. Seeds ingested by birds in captivity germinated earlier than the control seeds, within 1-2 weeks, and had proportion and germination rates higher than controls. Probably both mechanical and chemical effects play a role in enhancing germination of seeds. In Brazil where both Schinus and avian frugivores had evolved together, the dependence of Schinus on generalist frugivores had been demonstrated in this study, similar to other countries where the invasive Schinus is dependent on native or introduced avian species for its spreading. This finding has important implications for the restoration of human-altered areas in South America, were Schinus is a native pioneer species, as well as for the management and restoration of areas invaded by Schinus elsewhere. Resumo: As aves frugívoras desempenham papel chave na dispersão de sementes e no estabelecimento de uma ampla gama de espécies de plantas, incluindo espécies invasoras como a Aroeira-vermelha Schinus terebinthifolius. O potencial de dispersão das sementes de Aroeira-vermelha pelas aves com diferentes tipos de comportamentos alimentares foi estudado através de testes de viabilidade de sementes e experimentos de germinação de sementes obtidas de aves em campo e de aves mantidas em cativeiro. Demonstrou-se que as sementes coletadas após a passagem pelo trato digestório de cinco espécies de aves em campo tiveram proporção de germinação mais alta e taxas de germinação semelhantes aos controles. A viabilidade das sementes ingeridas por Thraupis bonariensis, o qual mandibula as sementes antes de ingeri-las foi significativamente inferior ao controle, enquanto a redução na viabilidade das sementes ingeridas por Turdus amaurochalinus não foi significante. Sementes ingeridas por aves em cativeiro germinaram antes que seus controles, entre 1 e 2 semanas, e tiveram proporção e taxa de germinação mais altas que o controle. Biologia reprodutiva de Cordiera macrophylla (K. Schum.) Kuntze (Rubiaceae), espécie dioica da região sudoeste do Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil 1O gênero Cordiera (Rubiaceae) possui aproximadamente 25 espécies e ampla distribuição no Brasil. Seus representantes são árvores ou arbustos dioicos, com flores funcionalmente unissexuadas. Este estudo foi realizado em dois fragmentos de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, no município de Tangará da Serra, MT. Foram investigadas a fenologia reprodutiva, a razão sexual, a morfologia e a biologia floral, o sistema e o sucesso reprodutivo. Cordiera macrophylla floresceu de julho a setembro, durante a estação seca, com pico sincrônico entre flores pistiladas e estaminadas. Flores estaminadas florescem antecipadamente e por um período mais prolongado que as pistiladas. A antese das flores pistiladas apresentou maior longevidade. A razão sexual foi de 1:1. Flores estaminadas são dispostas em inflorescências umbeliformes e as pistiladas são unifloras, ambas semelhantes morfologicamente. Os frutos são bagas verrucosas, polispérmicas. A taxa de formação de frutos por polinização natural foi de 95%, evidenciando a dependência dos polinizadores para a manutenção da espécie. O sucesso reprodutivo também foi alto, confirmando que a associação entre morfologia e biologia floral favoreceu a espécie nas áreas estudadas. Its representatives are dioecious trees or shrubs, with functionally unisexual flowers. The study was carried out in two fragments of seasonal semideciduous forest, in the municipality of Tangará da Serra -MT. The reproductive phenology, sex ratio, morphology, and floral biology, as well as the reproductive system and success were investigated. Cordiera macrophylla bloomed in the dry season, from July to September, with synchronous peaks between pistillate and staminate flowers. Staminate bloom earlier and for a longer period than the pistillate flowers. The longevity of anthesis of female flowers was greater. The sex ratio was 1: 1. Staminate flowers are arranged in bell-shaped inflorescences and single-flowered pistillates, and are morphologically similar. The fruits are warty, polyspermic berries. The fruit formation rate by natural pollination was 95%, demonstrating the dependence on pollinators to maintain the species. The reproductive success was also high, confirming that the association between morphology and floral biology favored the species in the studied areas.

ABSTRACT. Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi is a perennial native from Atlantic forest. It is of high ecological plasticity and is used in traditional medicine. Based on promising reports concerning its bioactivity, it was included as a species of great interest for distribution through the National Health System. A number of agronomic studies to guide its crop production are therefore underway. This study examined diversity and phylogenetic relationships among native S. terebinthifolius populations from different Brazilian ecosystems: Cerrado; sandbanks; dense rainforest; and deciduous forest. The intergenic regions rpl20-5'rps12, trnH-psbA, and trnS-trnG were sequenced from cpDNA and aligned using BLASTn. There were few fragments for comparison in GenBank and so only region trnStrnG was informative. There were variations among and within populations with intravarietal polymorphisms and three distinct haplotypes (HpSM, HpDDO, HpNE), once populations from NE (sandbanks and rainforest) clustered together. Sequences from HpSM, HpNE, and HpDDO returned greater similarity to haplotypes A (AY928398.1), B (AY928399.1), and C (AY928400.1), respectively. A network, built by median-joining among native haplotypes and 10 available on GenBank, revealed HpSM as the origin of all other haplogroups. HpDDO showed the most mutations and was closely related to haplogroups from Argentina. While this could indicate hybridization, we believe that the polymorphisms resulted from adaptation to events such as deforestation, fire, rising temperature, and seasonal drought during the transition from Atlantic forest to Cerrado. While more detailed phylogeographical studies are needed, these results indicate eligible groups for distinct climates as an important step for prebreeding programs before field propagation.
