Abstract

São Paulo This work was developed to implement the steps of adaptation and characterization of a 60 Co irradiator, which was used for treatment so that it can be used in clinical dosimeter calibration procedures used in radiotherapy. In this work, an adaptation of an irradiating system donated to the IPEN Calibration Laboratory was carried out and the characterization of the beam and the radiation field, according to the recommendations of the IAEA guide (TRS-469, 2009). For the installation of the new radiator, the current calibration room was adapted to accommodate the irradiator in the calibration position. The development of a support for its positioning was also part. Then, correction in the collimation system was necessary. For the characterization of the radiation beam, initial tests of uniformity of the radiation field were performed, determining the size and center of the radiation beam, determination of the kerma reference quantities in the air and dose absorbed in the water, variations in output due to the movement of the radiation source, stabilization time, leakage current test, repeatability test and long-term stability.
