The mini-grafting is a nondestructive vegetative propagation method based on grafting apical segments onto adult donor plantsderived rootstocks. Here, we aimed at evaluating the mini-grafting of shoot tips derived from adult Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa plants (yellow passion fruit) onto vegetatively propagated rootstocks of P. mucronata (sandbank passion fruit). Different shoot tip lengths and the fastening material were assayed. A randomized block experimental design was set up following a 2 × 3 factorial scheme [shoots: 8-12 and 3-7 cm × fastening materials (circular clip, "V" shaped clip, and Parafilm ® )] totaling six treatments with four repetitions of eight plants each. The following characteristics were evaluated: graft setting (%); graft and rootstock diameters (mm); graft diameter/rootstock diameter ratio; cellular division in the graft region and starch presence in the graft and rootstock. Parafilm ® provided better adhesion (89.57%) compared to circular (76.03%) and "V" shaped clips (68.74%). The attachment was favored by rootstocks with 8-12 cm shoots (90.27%), compared with those of the 3-7 cm (65.96%). The presence of starch grains in the parenchymatic cells of the graft suggests the translocation of photo-assimilates from physiologically active mature leaves of P. edulis f. flavicarpa to the stem apex. Additionally, the hydrolysis and mobilization of the starch associated and the endogenous auxin levels in this meristematic region may have been responsible for improving the success of the mini-grafting.

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) is characterized by being a tropical fruit, with significant production in Brazil, however the occurrence of diseases, especially fungal infections that affects the root system, has reduced its production. Some Passifloraceae species are reported as being resistant to these pathogens, which feature in potential rootstock for P. edulis cultivation in contaminated areas, although the patterns of growth and development of these species has not being elucidated yet. Thus, the objective was to study the dynamics of growth and evaluate the dry matter distribution of passion fruit with potential rootstock use. Passiflora cincinnata, Passiflora mucronata, Passiflora giberti, Passiflora morifolia and Passiflora edulis (control) developed in polyvinyl chloride tubes of 100 mm in diameter and 150 cm in height, in order to assess plant height, leaf area, number of secondary roots, stem diameter, taproot lenght, root system volume, absolute growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, leaf mass ratio and root mass ratio, at 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 days after transplanting. The species P. cincinnata, P. giberti and P. morifolia presented higher or similar growth rates than P. edulis for all evaluated characteristics, throughout the evaluation period. The root system of the species P. giberti and P. morifolia showed better distribution along the substrate. The species P. mucronata obtained lower growth than other species, both for the shoot and the root system. Algumas espécies da família Passifloraceae são relatadas como resistentes a estes fitopatógenos, caracterizando em potenciais porta-enxerto para cultivo do P. edulis. Deste modo, objetivou-se estudar a dinâmica de crescimento e distribuição de massa seca de passifloráceas com potencial de uso como porta-enxerto do maracujazeiro azedo. Resumo: A espécie Passiflora mucronata apresenta bom potencial para uso como porta-enxerto do maracujá azedo, por ser resistente a algumas doenças, e como ornamental. Conhecendo-se, no entanto, pouco a respeito de sua fisiologia. A obtenção da área foliar é fundamental em vários estudos agronômicos, sendo um dos importantes instrumentos que avaliam o crescimento da planta. Objetivou-se com este trabalho estudar a modelagem estatística da área foliar de Passiflora mucronata, cultivada nos ambientes casa de vegetação e campo, a partir de dimensões lineares de comprimento e maior largura do limbo. A área foliar observada foi medida com o auxílio do software ImageJ ® por análise de imagens digitalizadas das folhas. Foram estimadas equações por meio de modelos de regressão linear, potência e exponencial para os dois tipos de ambiente, e verificada a possibilidade de uso de apenas uma equação que represente a área foliar em plantas dos dois ambientes. As equações foram validadas a partir de outras amostras. Conclui-se que a determinação da área foliar de Passiflora mucronata pode ser feita de forma não destrutiva com o uso da maior largura do limbo, e a equação AFE = 1,8963 L 1,7275 representa a área foliar tanto para casa de vegetação quanto para campo. Abstract:The species Passiflora mucronata shows good potential for use as rootstock with the sour passion fruit, as it is resistant to some diseases, and as an ornamental plant; little is known however about its physiology. Obtaining the leaf area is fundamental in several agronomic studies, being one of the important methods for evaluating growth in the plant. The aim of this work was to study statistical modelling of the leaf area in Passiflora mucronata, grown in a greenhouse and in the field, from linear dimensions of the length and greatest width of the blade. The leaf area being observed was measured with the aid of the ImageJ ® software by the analysis of scanned leaf images. Equations were estimated using linear, exponential and power regression models for both types of environment, and the possibility was checked of using only one equation, which would represent leaf area in plants from the two environments. The equations were validated from other samples. It was concluded that determining leaf area in Passiflora mucronata could be carried out in a non-destructive way using the largest width of the blade, and that the equation AFE = 1.8963 W 1.7275 represents leaf area both for in the greenhouse and in the field.
