Surfactants are the major active ingredients of laundry detergents. Therefore, special attention should be focused on the treatment and disposal of laundry wastewater. The aim of this study was to characterise the wastewater from a commercial laundry over 30 days. Physicochemical analyses were performed, monitoring the content of nitrogen, phosphate, heavy metals, linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), volatile organic acids and alcohols. The pH was approximately 5.6 and the COD approximately 4800 mg•L −1. The average concentrations of sulphate, sulphide, N-ammoniacal organic nitrogen compounds and heavy metals were below the maximum limit, in accordance with local and national environmental legislation, and the average total suspended solids was 0.08 g•L −1. Among the metals analysed, iron was observed with the highest concentrations (0.037 mg•L −1 and 0.72 mg•L −1). Phosphate was detected in 93% of samples (94.65 mg•L −1 average). LAS was detected in all samples (12.24 mg•L −1 to 1023.7 mg•L −1). Thirty-three different xenobiotic organic compounds were identified in the laundry wastewater with the qualitative screening. The major groups of the compounds were fragrances, preservatives, solvents and some surfactants. Although the characterisation indicated low values for many parameters, this does not eliminate the need for specific treatment before its disposal at the sewage system.

Emerging contaminants are substances found in the environment whose concentrations vary from µg to ng L-1 and whose presence in wastewater has gained popularity in the scientific community due to the potential impacts these compounds can cause to the environment. This designation concerns the lack of legislation to regulate their discharge or even to monitor these compounds. Moreover, emerging contaminants are capable of causing harmful effects to nontarget organisms and therefore affect the ecosystem balance. There are several compounds classified as emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, hormones, pesticides, among others. And among them, caffeine is considered an emerging contaminant and can be highlighted due its presence in medicines, beverages, foodstuff and several other products. In addition, it is a compound used worldwide recognized as a marker of anthropogenic activity. In this review, we present a discussion about emerging contaminants, focusing on caffeine, regulatory aspects that involve the theme, as well as effects on organisms, removal technologies and techniques for analyzing these compounds in environmental matrices.

RESUMO-A presença de diferentes fármacos em águas de efluentes de esgoto tratado é uma preocupação crescente, dado os impactos ambientais que isto causa. A presença de antibióticos, sobretudo, preocupa devido à possibilidade do desenvolvimento de bactérias resistentes aos mesmos, além dos efeitos em animais e nos seres humanos. Sendo assim, o surgimento de métodos alternativos, para substituir os tradicionais, ganham cada vez mais destaque. Entre estes, a adsorção é um método eficaz que emergiu por apresentar vantagens como a fácil operação e o baixo custo e assim, deve-se estudar as melhores condições para aumentar sua eficácia. Nesse cenário, este projeto avaliou a influência do pH na adsorção do antibiótico ofloxacino pela argila Verde-lodo calcinada. Os testes apontaram que o pH inicial da solução não influenciou na remoção do antibiótico e apresentou resultados significativos de remoção (> 99,5%) para toda a faixa de pH estudada.
