ABSTRACT. The aim of this research was to evaluate vitreousness in commercial corn hybrids with flint and dent grains and to study the effect of this characteristic on agronomic behavior, nutritional value, and ruminal degradability of grains harvested in silage maturity. Twelve commercial corn hybrids were evaluated. They were divided in two groups (six with flint grains and six with dent grains). The experiments were conducted in two municipalities represented by Guarapuava and Laranjeiras do Sul, both in Paraná State. The harvest for the grain quality analysis was performed at ¾ of the milk line stage in the grain. The following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield, grain yield in silage maturity, vitreousness, ruminal digestibility of grain, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and crude protein. The grains in the group of dent hybrids exhibited better degradability associated with lower vitreousness than the group of flint hybrids. The group of dent hybrids exhibited better ruminal digestibility of the grains associated with lower vitreousness versus the group of flint hybrids. There is a negative correlation between vitreousness and the digestibility of the grain; thus, vitreousness can be a criterion for selecting genotypes for forage production.

Due to the seasonal cycle of forage, the use of silage to feed animals provides nutrients throughout the year. However, its quality can be improved with the inclusion of additives and other products. Glycerol is a rich source of energy and present a high efficiency of utilization by animals. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of glycerol inclusion on the chemical and fermentation characteristics of corn and sunflower silages. Two silage sources (maize and sunflower) were used and four levels of glycerol inclusion (0, 15, 30 and 45%) based on dry matter were carried out. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement with five replications. The pH values and chemical composition of corn and sunflower silages were determined. In both silages there was increment of dry matter, non-fiber carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients (TDN) added to a reduction of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber due to the glycerol inclusion. The corn silage required 45% glycerol to achieve the TDN level of the sunflower silage. The glycerol addition contributed to the increase in the nutritional value, offsetting loss of quality in the ensiling process. RESUMOEm decorrência do ciclo estacional das forrageiras, o uso de silagem na alimentação animal permite o suprimento de nutrientes durante o ano todo. No entanto, sua qualidade pode ser melhorada com a inclusão de aditivos e outros produtos. O glicerol constitui uma fonte rica em energia e apresenta alta eficiência de utilização pelos animais. Assim, neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão de glicerol nas silagens de milho e de girassol sobre as características bromatológicas e fermentativas do material ensilado. Foram utilizadas duas fontes de silagem (milho e girassol) e quatro níveis de inclusão de glicerol (0, 15, 30 e 45%), com base na matéria seca. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial (2x4) com cinco repetições. Determinaram-se os valores de pH e da composição bromatológica das silagens de milho e de girassol.Em ambas as silagens houve incremento nos teores de matéria seca, carboidratos não fibrosos e nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT), somados à redução de proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro e fibra em detergente ácido com a inclusão de glicerol. A silagem de milho necessitou de 45% de inclusão de glicerol para alcançar o teor de NDT da silagem de girassol. A inclusão de glicerol nas silagens de milho e de girassol contribui com o aumento no valor nutritivo, compensando possíveis perdas de qualidade no processo de ensilagem.Termos para indexação: Glicerina bruta, biocombustíveis, matéria seca, qualidade de fermentação, forragem conservada.

RESUMOForam avaliados doze híbridos comerciais de milho com grãos duros e dentados em dois locais no Centro Sul do Paraná, com o objetivo de estudar o efeito da vitreosidade dos grãos no comportamento agronômico, valor nutricional e na digestibilidade da massa seca dos grãos e da forragem no ponto de ensilagem. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, e a colheita para análise da qualidade da forragem e dos grãos, foi realizada no estádio de ¾ da linha do leite no grão, correspondente ao ponto de ensilagem. Foram avaliadas características produtivas, vitreosidade, digestibilidade dos grãos e da forragem, bem como características bromatológicas dos híbridos avaliados. Houve efeito significativo para locais, híbridos, e para interação híbridos x locais para características de importância para forragem. Por meio da análise da vitreosidade constatou-se genótipos de milho com textura dos grãos, variando de 50,1 a 75,2% demonstrando variabilidade disponível para o caráter em híbridos comerciais. Os híbridos AS 1572PRO e AG 8041PRO de grãos dentados semi dentados, destacaram-se e podem ser recomendados como sendo de elevada produtividade de massa seca digestível.Palavras-chave: grãos dentados, grãos duros, ponto de ensilagem, vitreosidade, Zea mays Bromatological characteristics of the grain and forage of corn hybrids with different grains textures ABSTRACTWere evaluated twelve commercial corn hybrids with hard and dent grains in two locals in South Central of Paraná State, South Region, Brazil, with the objective of study the effect of the vitreousness of the grains in agronomic behavior, nutritional value and digestibility dry mass of grains and forage, at the silage maturity. The vitreousness analyses possibly to verify corn genotypes with grains textures ranging from 50.1 to 75.2%, showing variability available for the character in commercial hybrids. The hybrids AS 1572PRO and AG 8041PRO, with dent and semi dent grains, stood out and can be recommended as high productivity of digestible dry matter.
