-Forest fires are a permanent threat in urban-forest interface areas and cause considerable environmental damage, especially in protected areas. An efficient way to assist decision-making to prevent an increase in forest fires is risk assessment using geographical information systems (GIS). The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of forest fires in the municipality of Bodoquena, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, using remote sensing data and spatial analysis techniques implemented in a GIS. The procedures of the methodology are based on spatial analysis techniques to prepare maps of the likelihood of fire based on calculations of the Euclidean distance, the Kernel statistical method and fuzzy transformation and to combine these maps via the increasing diffuse overlay method. The results showed a high risk of forest fires on the margins of the urban area, rural settlements and main roads that cross the municipality, as well as the surrounding areas. It is concluded that the municipality of Bodoquena has a high risk of forest fires in areas with high biodiversity, especially the areas surrounding the Serra da Bodoquena National Park and Mato Grosso do Sul Pantanal.

Os fatores que influenciam a fauna de formigas que forrageia sobre Bauhinia monandra Kurz. (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) foram avaliados em área urbana no município de Três Rios, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. As formigas foram coletadas com armadilhas arbóreas distribuídas em 15 indivíduos de B. monandra, realizando-se uma coleta no período de floração e outra no período sem flores. Foram obtidas 20 espécies de formigas, pertencentes a 11 gêneros e cinco subfamílias. A riqueza de espécies foi significativamente maior no período de floração (16 espécies) que no período sem flores (11 espécies). O Índice de Diversidade de Shannon também foi significativamente maior no período de floração (2,28) que no período sem flores (1,81). A composição da mirmecofauna variou expressivamente entre as duas épocas de coleta. O diâmetro da copa das árvores, a circunferência do tronco a altura do peito e o número de flores explicaram conjuntamente mais de 56% da variação da riqueza de espécies de formigas, por árvore. Neste sentido, a floração de B. monandra pode proporcionar recursos adicionais para a mirmecofauna. Além disso, os resultados demonstram que preservar as árvores mais antigas da arborização urbana e evitar podas desnecessárias podem propiciar a presença de uma maior gama de espécies de formigas sobre as árvores.

This study aimed to evaluate the ant fauna in three different land-use systems: pasture, eucalyptus plantation and secondary forest, in southeastern Brazil. The ant fauna was collected with standardized pitfall traps. Forty-seven ant species were collected, belonging to 24 genera and six subfamilies. The total ant species richness was significantly higher in secondary forest (29 species) and eucalyptus plantation (25 species) when compared to the pasture (17 species), with no significant difference between the secondary forest and eucalyptus plantation. The species composition differed significantly between the three land-use systems. The frequency distributions of ant guilds in eucalyptus plantation and secondary forest differed significantly from the frequency in the pasture. The results demonstrated the importance of natural forests for the conservation of biological diversity of the Atlantic Forest, but they also indicated that eucalyptus plantations, with native understory plants, can harbor considerable ant diversity.
