Abstract:Caracalla (188–217
ce
) was the eldest son of Septimius Severus and was the second emperor of the Severan dynasty. He is arguably best known for his infamous assassination of his younger brother, Geta, after which he ruled the empire alone (211–17). While undoubtedly marked by violence and cruelty, Caracalla's reign also saw important constitutional change, such as the extension of Roman citizenship across nearly all free inhabitants of the empire.
