Capturing the Experiences and Challenges of Emerging Adults in College During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Emerging adulthood (ages 18-30 years) coincides with "aging out" of pediatric care. As a result, combined internal medicine and pediatrics (Med-Peds) providers are tasked with promoting the health and well-being of this population during and post-coronavirus disease 2019 . In order to inform the response efforts, we aimed to capture emerging adults' COVID-19 experiences and challenges during a two-week period of the pandemic in June 2020. “…Efforts to support these patients should include providing access to a range of educational, health, and social resources. “…A lack of robust research on college students with ADHD perpetuates shortcomings in healthcare practice and policy for this population [21,22]. It is particularly important to recognize these co-occurring challenges in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which all college students experienced significant health, financial, educational, and professional obstacles [23]. The current study addresses gaps in the field by comparing a nationally representative U.S. sample of first-year college students with ADHD to students without ADHD on demographics, mental and physical health, academic achievement, and confidence in their academic and social capacities, with the broader goal of promoting the health and well-being of this population.…”

“…“Emerging Adulthood” is defined as a developmental period ranging approximately from 18 to 30 years of age and refers primarily to young adults who do not have children, do not live in their own home, or do not have sufficient income to become fully independent [ 12 ]. Although young adults are expected to leave home, which leads to further redefinitions of the relationship with their original family, about 50% of Italian young adults live at home up until the age of 35 and 30% are involved in long-distance romantic relationships, thereby delaying a stable commitment to a partner [ 13 ].…”

“…As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, post-secondary students worldwide have experienced a wide array of new and unprecedented challenges. These challenges have included stressors faced by the general population, such as increased social isolation stemming from social distancing guidelines, lockdowns, and stay-at-home orders ( Hotez et al, 2021 ; Kujawa et al, 2020 ). In addition, students have experienced stressors unique to the post-secondary context.…”
