Capture the Flag for Team Construction in Cybersecurity

Abstract: Team collaboration among individuals with diverse sets of expertise and skills is essential for solving complex problems. As part of an interdisciplinary effort, we studied the effects of Capture the Flag (CTF) game, a popular and engaging education/training tool in cybersecurity and engineering, in enhancing team construction and collaboration. We developed a framework to incorporate CTF as part of a computer-human process for expertise recognition and role assignment and evaluated and tested its effectivenes… Show more

“…They suggest that, in order for learning and development and, in turn, overall team progress to occur (van Woerkom and Croon, 2009), leaders may need to first focus on alleviating anxiety that is induced from the broader environment. Soft skills, including social interaction and intercultural competence, also serve as a precursor to the successful application of tech-based skills in VTPs (Chang et al. , 2022).…”

“…Furthermore, virtual learning incorporated in the curricula facilitates virtual intelligence, develop students' resilience, practice-readiness, as well as frustration tolerance and empathy [6]. Essential for cybersecurity professionals are teamwork skills, which enable them to collaboratively search for solutions to cyberthreats [7]. Communication skills and the ability to interact in a team, as well as to ascertain individual team members' strengths when delegating or assigning tasks are critical to their work.…”

“…Communication skills and the ability to interact in a team, as well as to ascertain individual team members' strengths when delegating or assigning tasks are critical to their work. These abilities include communicating across digital channels and building rapport within relatively short time periods [7]. Experiential learning through GVT projects allows students to hone these essential skills in order to best prepare for the challenges they can expect in their professional lives.…”
