Capripox in Bangladesh

Abstract: In 1984 capripox entered Bangladesh developing into a severe epidemic causing high mortality in the indigenous goat population. Although at present mainly confined to the western districts the disease has spread to some central and northern districts and unless controlled could spread further. Clinically and biochemically the strain is closely related to a strain previously isolated in central India. It has been shown that restriction endonuclease analysis of the genome of field isolates of capripoxvirus can p… Show more

“…This marks the first occasion that parapoxviruses have been identified in Bangladesh. Unlike capripoxviruses (sheep pox and goat pox), which are endemic to Bangladesh, parapoxviruses can be transmitted to humans [ 32 ]. This underscores the importance of determining the infectious etiology of pox-like dermal lesions on domestic bovines to avoid confusion with infections caused by more serious zoonotic pathogens (e.g., buffalopox virus, Bacillus anthracis ), or with agents that cause severe, notifiable animal diseases (e.g., FMD or Bluetongue) and to ensure that appropriate medical and veterinary interventions are employed.…”

Sheeppox or goatpox extended their range into Bangladesh in 1984 (Kitching et al., 1987b) and more recently into Vietnam (2005 and 2008) and Mongolia (2006 and 2007) in the east, and repeated incursions have been reported in Greece in southern Europe (2007) (World Animal Health Information Database, OIE).…”

“…Studies in the past for Nigerian, Middle Eastern, and Indian strains of SPPV and GTPV and for LSDV have concluded the type of the Capripoxvirus on the basis of host specificity in mixed populations (Kitching, et al, 1989(Kitching, et al, ,1987. Four outbreaks affecting solely the goats were investigated from Same flock of sheep and goat mixed populations in one district of Xinjiang.…”
