Capnocytophaga endodontalis sp. nov., Isolated from a Human Refractory Periapical Abscess

Abstract: A novel Gram-negative, capnophilic, fusiform bacterium, designated strain ChDC OS43, was isolated from a human refractory periapical abscess in the left mandibular second molar and was characterized by polyphasic taxonomic analysis. The 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain belongs to the genus Capnocytophaga, as it showed sequence similarities to Capnocytophaga ochracea ATCC 27872 (96.30%) and C. sputigena ATCC 33612 (96.16%). The prevalent fatty acids of strain ChDC OS43 were isoC (57.54%), C (5.93… Show more

“…Strain p1a2 T and 051621 showed identity to a previously described genospecies of the genus Capnocytophaga AHN8471 [5] and a putative novel species without a validly published name ' Capnocytophaga endodontalis ' strain ChDC OS43 [28] based on the genomes. The similarities of 16S rRNA gene sequences were 99.12–99.27 % between p1a2 T and AHN8471/ChDC OS43 T , and 99.79–99.93 % between 051621 and AHN8471/ChDC OS43 T .…”

“…We have compared the physiology and chemotaxonomy characteristics among p1a2 T , 051621, Capnocytophaga genospecies AHN8471 [5] and Capnocytophaga endodontalis ChDC OS43 T [28]. The ability to produce acid from d -galactose, d -glucose and d -fructose were identified as common traits that can differentiate the entire group from C.…”

“…Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species, namely C. canimorsus , C. canis , C. sputigena , C. gingivalis , C. ochracea , C. haemolytica , C. leadbetteri , C. granulosa , and C. cynodegmi that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis , have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively [ 7 , 11 ]. Capnocytophaga spp.…”
