Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicaemia in an asplenic patient with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Asplenic patients are highly susceptible to infections with encapsulated bacteria such as Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a gram negative bacillus which is a commensal organism in cat and dog saliva. We describe the first case of septic shock due to C canimorsus infection occurring in a 51-year-old woman with functional asplenism related to systemic lupus erythematosus with antiphospholipid antibodies. Because of the potential severity of this infection, physicians have to be aware of its occurrence in lupus patien… Show more

“…patients with chronic alcohol use, cirrhosis, malnutrition and post splenectomy. These patients should be prophylactically treated with penicillins with beta lactamase inhibitor [3,[8][9][10][11][12]. However, no identifiable risk factor was found in 40 % of cases of sepsis caused by C. canimorsus [1,2].…”

“…Capnocytophaga canimorsus is bacteria commonly present in oral cavity of dogs and cats. Transmission to human is possible following a bite or a scratch by the animal, wound can be sometimes negligible and resulting infection often underestimated [1][2][3]. Especially immunocompromised patients and patients with severe comorbidities are susceptible to develop severe sepsis/septic shock not infrequently with fatal outcome.…”

“…To date, single cases of bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis of this etiology have been described. Immunosuppression, and especially asplenia, as predisposing factors are emphasized [ 19 , 20 ]. Although C. canimorsus infections most often occur in immunocompromised individuals, they may happen in immunocompetent patients as well [ 3 ].…”
