Capital Punishment and Deterrence

Abstract: The ongoing debate about the state's use of capital punishment to deter crime can be traced to the emergence of ‘the state.’ Discussed are methods of execution, general and specific deterrence, research findings regarding its ability to deter crime, criminologists' perspectives about capital punishment as a deterrent, impact of capital punishment on society, and regional differences in the use of capital punishment.
