Capillostrongyloides arapaimae sp. n. (Nematoda: Capillariidae), a new intestinal parasite of the arapaima Arapaima gigas from the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: A new nematode species, Capillostrongyloides arapaimae sp. n., is described from the intestine and pyloric caeca of the arapaima, Arapaima gigas (Schinz), from the Mexiana Island, Amazon river delta, Brazil. It is characterized mainly by the length of the spicule (779-1,800 µm), the large size of the body (males and gravid females 9. 39-21.25 and 13.54-27.70 mm long, respectively) and by the markedly broad caudal lateral lobes in the male. It is the third species of genus Capillostrongyloides reported to par… Show more

“…Because of their shape and general structure, eggs found in the present study resemble those of Paracapillaria malayensis and Capillostrongyloides arapaimae , differing from the former mainly in the polar plug, more irregular sculpture, size and host range (Moravec et al , 2007), and from the latter in the superficial net-like sculpture, size and host range (Santos et al , 2008). Additionally, egg shape and ornamentation are similar to those of eggs belonging to the genus Calodium , including C. hepaticum .…”

“…Eight nematode species were reported in A. gigas: Camallanus tridentatus (Drasche, 1884) (Camallanidae); Capillostrongyloides arapaimae Santos, Moravec & Venturieri, 2008 (Capillariidae) Eustrongylides sp. Jagerskiold, 1909 (Dioctophymatidae); Gnathostoma gracilis (Diesing, 1839) (Gnathostomidae); Goezia spinulosa (Diesing, 1839) (Anisakidae); Nilonema senticosum (Baylis, 1927) (Philometridae); Terranova serrata (Drasche, 1884) (Anisakidae) and Rumai rumai Travassos, 1960 (Philometridae) (Vicente et al, 1985;Moravec, 1998;Thatcher, 2006;Santos et al, 2008;Luque et al, 2011).…”

“…The parasites were found free or penetrating the tissues mainly of the stomach but also the intestine of the fi sh, sometimes perforating the wall of these organs. Other nematodes of A. gigas in the area as Nilonema senticosum (Baylis, 1927), Rumai rumai Travassos, 1960, Camallanus tridentatus (Drasche, 1884 and Capillostrongyloides arapaimae Santos, Moravec et Venturieri, 2008 have been dealt with in our previous papers (Santos and Gibson 2007, Santos and Moravec 2009a. Goezia spinulosa is redescribed herein based on the examination of freshly collected material from wild and cultured arapaimas.…”
