“…Its chemical composition is characterized by high amounts of α-thujone, camphor, β-pinene and α-pinene, and is similar to those found in the oils from Italy (Veličkovic et al 2003), Romania (Veličkovic et al 2003;Radulescu et al 2004), Serbia and Montenegro (Couladis et al 2002;Mitić-Culafić et al 2005), Brazil (Pierozan et al 2009) and Turkey (Karaaslan & Özguven, 2001).…”

“…Sage essential oil is also effective against several bacteria, e.g., Listeria monocytogenes (1 ml essential oil : 1 ml 96% ethanol), Bacillus cereus (0,5 mL of essential oil), Bacillus subtilis (0,5 mL of essential oil), Escherichia coli (0,5 mL of essential oil) and Staphylococcus aureus (0,5 mL of essential oil), all recognized foodborne pathogens (Veliθkovic et al 2003;Radulescu et al 2004;Mitić-Culafić et al 2005;Estévez et al 2007;Delamare et al 2007;Klaus et al 2009). However, antimicrobial activity (6,4 mg essential oil : 1 ml methanol) was not observed against Staphylococcus aureus in recent study (Pozzo et al 2011).…”

“…In another study, the essential oil from the sage dried shoots (vegetative aerial parts) was analyzed by GC, and GC/MS; the major compounds were determined as cis-thujone (17.4 %), α-humulene (13.3 %), 1, 8-cineole (12.7 %), E-caryophyllene (8.5 %) and borneol (8.3 %) [13]. The leaves of S. officinalis from Romania have been also analyzed and, α-thujone (21.85 %), camphor (11.25 %), veridiflorol (11.71 %) and manool (9.15%) were detected as major constituents by GC/MS [7]. The major constituents of the essential oil from aerial parts of S. officinalis cultivated in South Brazil were α-thujone (24.8 %), 1, 8-cineole (14.8 %), camphor (10.9 %), borneol (11.1 %) and β-pinene (9.87 %) [1].…”

“…Consequently, various medicinally important bioactive compounds such as diterpenoids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, polysaccharides, phenolic glycosides and phenolic acid derivatives have been isolated from different species of Salvia [5,7,8]. For example, Raal et al reported that the main compounds of sage oil from Estonia and other European countries were: 1,8-cineole, camphor, α-thujone, β-thujone, borneol and viridiflorol [9].…”

“…Gas chromatography (GC) is broadly employed in the evaluation of chemical compounds of essential oils and is considered as an efficient separation method of the different complex structures present in oils (RADULeSCU; ChILIMeNT;oPReA et al, 2004;BoZIN et al, 2006).…”
