CAPD versus haemodialysis: A comparison in the same patients

Abstract: Most studies comparing CAPD and haemodialysis (HD) were done in different populations, matched for sex and age. The present report compared 13 non-diabetic end-stage renal failure patients who were treated for at least six months with each type of therapy. Analysis of the data revealed a higher haemoglobin during CAPD but no differences in the blood transfusion requirements. Serum creatinine, BUN and potassium were lower during CAPD and serum calcium was higher during HD. Serum cholesterol levels were higher d… Show more

“…Hospitalisation is a very important indicator of morbidity in assessment of the peritoneal dialysis program, such as in haemodialysis. There are many publications comparing hospitalisations between PD and HD, but there are few and small studies in this aspect between patients who started PD as a substitutive therapy and patients treated sequentially with haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis [ 54 – 56 ]. In our study period, we did not observe any statistical differences in admissions nor number of hospitalizations days per patients/year between both groups.…”

“…Approximately 60% of Medicare's ESRD bud get. in the United States, is spent on the cost of morbidity and hospitalizations [1], Reports of hospitalization rates among ESRF patients have used different methodologies [2][3][4], Some series included only hospitalizations due to dialysis complications [2], others included only accessrelated hospitalizations [1. 4] and in others there is no specification [3], Therefore, we performed a 1-year pro spective study of all hospitalizations of the ESRF patients treated at our institution.…”
