Capacity Development through the US President’s Malaria Initiative–Supported Antimalarial Resistance Monitoring in Africa Network

Abstract: Antimalarial drug resistance is an evolving global health security threat to malaria control. Early detection of Plasmodium falciparum resistance through therapeutic efficacy studies and associated genetic analyses may facilitate timely implementation of intervention strategies. The US President’s Malaria Initiative–supported Antimalarial Resistance Monitoring in Africa Network has assisted numerous laboratories in partner countries in acquiring the knowledge and capability to independently monitor for molecul… Show more

“…This is mainly a network of researcher institutions aimed at providing up to date spatial and temporal information on anti-malarial resistance on a global level. The PMI supported anti-malarial resistance network (PARMA) is another initiative aiming at standardizing, data sharing and capacity building in African PMI-funded countries [ 141 ]. However, efforts to bring together the scientific community and national stakeholders, especially the National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs) remain challenging.…”

“…The P. falciparum lab strain 3D7 Pfcrt, Pfk13, and Pfmdr1 were used as reference sequences for the analysis. Molecular analyses were performed in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Malaria Laboratory in Atlanta, USA, as part of the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI)-supported Antimalarial Resistance Monitoring in Africa Network [17].…”
