Capacity and Error Performance Verification of Multi-Antenna Schemes in Radio-Over-Fiber Distributed Antenna System

Abstract: A radio-over-fiber distributed antenna system permits larger physical separation between antennas in a wireless system's infrastructure; this investigation verifies that improved performance -lower error rates and higher capacities -can thus be achieved. In this paper, specific single-input multiple-output (SIMO), multiple-input single-output (MISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) algorithms are compared in an experimental radio over fiber system, using user-defined processing functions for the signa… Show more

“…For biorthogonal wavelets, a slight increase of power penalty is observed to achieve the minimum threshold with the increase of order of bior-wavelet from 1.3 to 1.5. This may be due to the increase in support width from (3,7) to (3,11) with increase of wavelet-order. For bior1.3-and bior1.5-wavelets, the measured BER saturates near 10 −4 at power penalty of 6 dB while bior2.2-and bior2.4-wavelets show an irreducible BER characteristic as shown in Figure 5 (c).…”

“…So, a versatile front-haul architecture based costeffective solution of RF transmission over fibre can be utilized to provide high-speed wireless access in indoor as well as outdoor applications by merging the benefits of enormous fibre-bandwidth and high wireless link-mobility [1], [2]. Moreover, due to their centralized architecture, it is easier to implement the advanced signal processing methods, for instance, higher order modulation, multi-carrier modulation and MIMO techniques to improve the wireless access in terms of data rate and reliability [3].…”

“…However, the hardware for multiuser transmission can still require a considerable number of RF chains (each having multiple, high-cost mmW components). For such systems, use of an analog Radio-overfiber (RoF) fronthaul can provide several advantages such as low loss transmission with ultra-high capacity [4] and centralized access for the RAUs [5]- [7], and RoF-supported multi-user transmission has been demonstrated using multiple transmit antennas at the RAU, each generating a single directional beam and serving a single user [8]- [10]. Use of a single laser source in RoF transport for multiple data channels can reduce the cost of operation as it does not require optical filters at the RAU to separate wavelengths and avoids issues related to wavelength drift of multiple laser sources [11], [12].…”

“…Space-Time Block coding (STBC) uses orthogonal coded data streams transmitted through independent antennas, providing spatial diversity gain at the receiver end for MIMO system [4]. This results in increased SNR and thus capacity of the overall system and has been demonstrated for RoF based systems [5] in providing transmit diversity gain. In 2×2 MIMO operation, for transmit symbols S1 and S2, the received signal Y in terms of the noise N and STBC codeword matrix…”
