In this paper, we study the impact of correlated fading channels on multiple secure decode-and-forward (DF) relaying with outdated relay selection, where the information transmission assisted by the N DF relays from the source to the destination can be overheard by the eavesdropper in the network. The eavesdropping channels are correlated with the main channels, which affects the network security. To enhance the network security, one best relay is chosen to assist the secure transmission, which is however maybe outdated in time-varying channel environments. The impact of both channel correlation and outdated relay selection on the secrecy performance is studied by deriving the analytical expression of the secrecy outage probability (SOP). The asymptotic SOP is also provided with high main-to-eavesdropper ratio (MER). From the asymptotic SOP, we find that only the outdated degree of relay selection affects the network secrecy diversity order, but the channel correlation does not. Moreover, it is interesting to find that the channel correlation is beneficial to the transmission security in the high MER regime.

The power allocation problem in a two-hop OFDM amplify-and-forward (AF) relay link is studied when the available channel state information (CSI) is an outdated, but correlated version of the actual instantaneous CSI. We propose a power loading scheme to maximize the outage rate. The outage rate achieved by the proposed approach is compared with uniform power allocation and instantaneous rate maximization to study the effectiveness of adaptive power loading when the available CSI is outdated. Results confirm that the proposed method achieves higher outage rate than the other two methods.

To rapidly deploy a communication network in the aftermath of disaster or emergency event, an Aerial-Terrestrial architecture integrating aerial base stations mounted on the balloons has been investigated in EU FP7 ABSOLUTE project. Since the signal coverage provided by aerial base stations is patchy and unstable, the opportunistic relaying is applied to increase the link reliability and the system robustness. However, the performance of relay selection drastically degrades due to the outdated Channel State Information (CSI) from the feedback delay over the Aerial-to-Terrestrial radio channels. In this paper, therefore, we present a novel method named opportunistic spacetime coding (OSTC) to combat the outdated CSI. The link reliability in terms of outage probability is evaluated using both Rayleigh channels and the realistic models of Aerial-to-Terrestrial and Device-to-Device channels. The numerical results reveal that OSTC obviously outperforms the opportunistic relaying in the presence of outdated CSI. Moreover, the improvement of reliability comes without any sacrifice in the spectral efficiency.
