Capacitive Coupling Element Antennas for Multi-Standard Mobile Handsets

Abstract: Antenna prototypes based on a simple capacitive coupling element (CCE) on a compact smartphone chassis are presented. This versatile antenna structure is easily modifiable with circuit design. We show with experimental data how the same CCE is implemented first with single-feed and then with dual-feed interface towards the transceiver front-end. These two antennas operate at the LTE-A frequencies 698-960 MHz and 1710-2690 MHz with good efficiency, owing to a novel dual-branch impedance matching circuit which u… Show more

“…Instead of covering all the channels simultaneously, the antenna can be tuned to a specific channel, thus relaxing the bandwidth requirements of the antenna. Approaches for antenna tuning include tunable matching components [7]- [9], switching between multiple matching circuit networks [10] or using, e.g., p-i-n diodes [11], [12] or FET switches [13] to modify the currents in the antenna. The last option is also known as aperture tuning.…”

“…Ground clearance between the middle frame and the side frame is 2.5 mm in the sides, and 10.2 or 7.8 mm in the ends. The key property of the model is the slotless metallic back cover, seen in Figure 2 The proposed antennas are of Capacitive Coupling Element (CCE) type [20,21], or slot antennas. CCEs are widely used at cellular frequencies due to their wide frequency band and robust performance.…”

“…A parasitic antenna was proposed in [8], and the antenna consisted of a feed monopole and a short stub, with a coupling aperture for matching adjustment, so the antenna achieved a wide band. Furthermore, the space left for antenna design is getting smaller and smaller, several scholars proposed using impedance matching circuit at feeding port to obtain broadband coverage [9][10][11][12]. RF switch is also used to design a reconfigurable antenna to achieve a wide band by combing several different statuses.…”
