The objective was to regulate the tourist and recreational activities that are developed within the Lagunas de Montebello National Park (PNLM, its acronym in Spanish) with the implementation of tourism carrying capacity (TCC) and limits of acceptable change (LAC). The method applied was Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) with an interview script to key informants, a field checklist with georeferencing, two workshops with local actors, analysis of satellite images and application of formulas for TCC. Results include the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis of the PNLM, the tourist capacity of sites for simultaneous users. Indicators for LAC were determined. Findings will assist public institutions to design better policies and strategies linked to tourism and sustainability.

La degradación de destinos turísticos sigue en aumento como producto de las acciones incontroladas por parte de sus visitantes; como consecuencia de esta situación, los recursos naturales de estos destinos resultan ser los más comprometidos debido, entre otros factores, a la falta de aplicación de controles para la regulación del flujo de turistas. En este artículo se analiza el tema de la capacidad de carga turística y su importancia en la prevención de problemas ambientales en el proceso de planificación estratégica y gestión ambiental sostenible, especialmente en destinos turísticos emergentes, destinos que cobran un importante protagonismo como receptores del turismo. Este estudio se aborda por medio de una perspectiva analítico documental, puesto que implica la revisión de la literatura académica para el análisis y la comparación de antecedentes pragmáticos sobre la utilización de metodologías para determinar el indicador. De la revisión se evidencia que ninguna de las metodologías para el efecto es de aplicación absoluta.

Visitors’ Perception of the Overcrowding of a Protected Natural Area: A Case Applied to the Natural Reserve “Garganta de los Infiernos” (Caceres, Spain)

The main objective of this research is to analyse the perception of visitors in protected natural areas struggling with mass tourism. An exhaustive analysis is carried out of both the tourist activity and the profile of the tourists in the Garganta de los Infiernos Natural Reserve (Extremadura, Spain). It studies variables such as the number of visitors, their personal profile, their perception of the protected area after the visit, etc. The method used was non-experimental, descriptive, qualitative and analytical, and it allowed for a better understanding of the profile of the visitors: sex, age, origin, professional profile, etc. The results show the visitors’ conviction about the need to properly manage areas of public use, mainly due to the notable and partly uncontrolled growth of tourism activity during certain periods of the year. On the other hand, the relevance of the actions of the Governing Board of the Natural Reserve is highlighted, as it guarantees public participation and channels the opinions of the main partners involved in the management of the protected area, to ensure a responsible management of tourism activity and improve its quality.
