“…Due to the small permeability of the system and the rather large strip volume (500 mL), the preconcentration factor was low (20) and accumulation time long (4 h). Recently, Ueberfeld et al [18] have coupled a fiber optic sensing system to the hollow fiber PLM developed by Parthasarathy et al [6]. It has been applied to the measurement of copper based on the fluorescence quenching of calcein and enabled real time measurement.…”

“…These systems have shown the potential of the technique but they were not optimized in terms of cell geometry and strip volume and were not developed for speciation measurements. Parthasarathy et al [6] have developed a carrier specially designed for metal speciation studies and the corresponding PLM system has been coupled on-line with a voltammetric detector using a single Ir-based Hg plated microelectrode [9 ± 11]. Accumulation factor of 800 and 300 after 20 min of accumulation were obtained for Pb and Cu, respectively, using a hollow fiber as PLM, leading to detection limit of 20 pM for Pb in these conditions.…”

“…However, it is not straight forward due to low concentration levels. A possible way is to use a separation/preconcentration supported liquid membrane technique (SLM) [17,22], applicable directly on board with minimum sample handling.…”

“…There are numerous recent reports of chemical separations by supported liquid membranes (SLM) (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). The pores of a microporous solid support are impregnated with a hydrophobic liquid, forming the membrane that separates the sample (donor) and receiver solutions.…”
