Capabilities of a Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor System to Monitor the Inelastic Response of Concrete Sections in New Tunnel Linings Subjected to Earthquake Loading

Abstract: In a comprehensive experimental campaign, we investigated the capabilities of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in monitoring the inelastic response of new circular concrete tunnel linings, subjected to seismic events. The FBG sensors measured the strains of steel reinforcement to be treated by a decision support system (DSS). First, a set of four‐point bending tests was performed on tunnel substructures, with the aim of characterizing the cross‐section under cyclic loading and of designing an FBG sensor packa… Show more

“…The target was the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) for monitoring tunnel linings in seismic-prone areas. The designed fiber sensor system reliably performed at large deformations for some substructure sections and for a full-scale concrete tunnel lining section [10]. In fact, for the latter case, external FBG packing showed a deformation of 0.63%, while a value of 1.2% was reached by internal fibers.…”

“…Some results on the full‐scale tunnel lining test are also presented in order to show the effectiveness of the FBG packaging optimization process performed in the substructure test programme. Nonetheless, more detailed information about this test and relevant damage estimation provided by FBG sensors can be found in a separate study .…”
