Capabilities for the internet of things enabled product-service system business models

Abstract: The Internet of things (IoT) transforms how businesses operate, create, and deliver products and services. Despite increasing interest in IoT business models, knowledge of the capabilities needed to implement them remains vague. The objective of this paper is to investigate patterns found in 21 empirical tested cases covering several industries. This paper identifies the most common capabilities (connectivity, data management and storage, monitoring, data analytics, control, operations management, maintenance,… Show more

“…The energy sector plays a key role towards sustainability goals and the residential sector is called upon to contribute. The literature has placed attention on the contributions that digital technologies can make (Karttunen et al, 2021;Ullah et al, 2021) and the future direction of research is to combine these two strategic aspects: sustainability and digitization.…”

“…The literature places attention on the relationship between business models and the most common capabilities when developing Internet of Things (IoT)-based PSS referred to several sectors, including also the energy one (Karttunen et al, 2021). In fact, the energy management (EM) is called not only to identify solutions related to the implementation of green plants in residential sector but also to energy efficiency models in which both Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Yigitcanlar et al, 2021) and Cyber-Physical System (CPS) (Morella et al, 2020) can play a key role towards the efficiency of resources.…”

“…Within the context of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) emerges as a highly promising paradigm for bolstering product quality and safety [46]. IoT achieves this by enabling a heightened level of oversight and control over logistical operations [47][48][49][50][51], thereby fostering improvements in supply chain sustainability [47,52,53].…”

“…Moreover, IoT implementation in agricultural supply chains places a significant emphasis on security requirements due to the potential risks associated with cyber-attacks and data breaches [50,88]. Security concerns in the agricultural sector extend to three key aspects: authentication, privacy, and access control [49,89]. Research by Zhao [90] introduced a custom encapsulation mechanism known as the smart business security IoT implementation protocol, which employs cross-platform communications, encryption, digital signatures, and authentication to establish a secure communication system among various entities in the agricultural supply chain.…”

“…As the number of these assets is high and their nature is often capital intensive, they are usually controlled by a few industry-specific players making their mobility less dynamic than in B2C markets. Still, the potential upside is the emergence of sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which allows for greater connectivity to industrial assets and opens the door to the creation of platform ecosystems in B2B markets (Karttunen et al, 2021;Pushpananthan and Elmquist, 2022).…”
