Capabilities and organisational dimensions conducive to green product innovation: Evidence from Croatian and Spanish manufacturing firms

Abstract: This paper aims to determine which configuration of green innovation capabilities (GICs) and organisational dimensions (ODs) leads to achieving green product innovation (GPI). We used data collected through the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS) from manufacturing firms in Spain and Croatia considered to be innovators. After conducting a cluster analysis, we identified a group of firms that still develop conventional product innovations (CPIs) and three groups of firms at different stages of GPI development. “…A robust EO compels firms to involve stakeholders and perpetually nurture, develop, and enhance their GM processes throughout the product life cycle. Thus, for successful SE and GM adoption, companies must expand their environmental consciousness, establish conduct codes related to carbon neutrality, and comprehend the environmental implications of their operations (Banerjee, 2002; Qiu et al, 2020; Serrano‐García et al, 2022; Waheed et al, 2020; Yu & Huo, 2019).…”

“…Furthermore, the predictors of a firm's SE for environmental implementation include engagement with customers (SEC), suppliers (SES), government (SEG), non‐governmental organizations (SEN), managers (SEM), and employees (SEE) (Danso et al, 2020; Garces‐Ayerbe et al, 2012; Jamali & Keshishian, 2009; Ki et al, 2020; Kitsis & Chen, 2021; Kozlowski et al, 2012; Kraft et al, 2013; Liu et al, 2017; Malviya et al, 2018; Modi & Mabert, 2007; Moshtari & Vanpoucke, 2021; Pinto, 2020; Shah & Soomro, 2021; Song et al, 2020; Song & Yu, 2018; Zhou et al, 2018; Zhou et al, 2020). Lastly, the predictors of firms' external and internal carbon neutrality environmental orientation (EEO and IEO) form the subconstructs of the carbon neutrality EO variable (Kang & He, 2018; Liu et al, 2021; Serrano‐García et al, 2022; Yu & Huo, 2019; Zhou et al, 2020).…”

“…The body of research highlights the need for a deliberate commitment to sustainability in order to build a strong green innovation capacity. Companies are more likely to invest in green innovation if they have a clear vision and are dedicated to minimizing their environmental effect (Serrano‐García et al, 2022; Yuan et al, 2023). This entails incorporating sustainability objectives that are consistent with carbon neutrality into their overarching business plans.…”
