Cantilevers: Multi-Tool in Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract: This review aims to discuss and illustrate various uses of cantilevers to solve multiple clinical issues and prove their versatility. Cantilevers are commonly used in the segmented arch technique, and they can be designed to solve various clinical problems with highly predictable results. Its design and shape can modify the various combinations of vertical and horizontal forces. The novel trend is to combine cantilevers with skeletal anchorage. Cantilevers offer a very simple and statically determined force sy… Show more

“…Several test models, including cantilever bending [4], three-point bending [5][6][7], and the three-bracket model [3,8], have been utilized to understand the flexural behavior of NiTi archwires to date. It is claimed that superelastic NiTi archwires exhibit a constant bending force behavior during the loading and unloading cycle, and this constant force trend can be observed when the archwires are bent in a cantilever and three-point arrangement.…”

“…Special cantilever springs have been proposed as a multi-tool in orthodontics [ 38 ] and are used for the treatment of palatally impacted canines, either inserted to the buccal auxiliary tubes of the molar band [ 39 ] or to the lingual sheath [ 40 ] and attached to the canine. However, they usually have a complicated design, which poses certain difficulties in construction, while multiple loops can be greatly difficult to adjust in clinical practice.…”
