Canopy Photosynthesis and Fiber Properties of Normal‐ and Late‐Planted Cotton

Abstract: the southeast USA, Porter et al. (1996) reported higher fiber strength, greater elongation, and lower micronaire Normal-and late-planted cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) often for late-planted cotton. They found no effect of planting differ in fiber properties, especially those properties related to fiber date on fiber length. Cathey and Meredith (1988) found secondary wall characteristics. This field study was conducted to (i) determine the effect of planting date on fiber properties of bolls at that late plan… Show more

“…& Zhiguo Zhou giscott@njau.edu.cn resulted in reduced lint yield with low boll weight due to delayed maturity and carbohydrate deficiency (Arshad et al 2007;Bauer et al 2000;Gwathmey and Clement 2010). The response of fiber quality to planting date had not come to an agreement because plant density, fertilization, weather events and cultivars adaptation can all influence fiber quality (Gipson and Joham 1968;Liakatas et al 1998).…”

“…However, cotton growers often lost the optimal sowing date waiting for the harvest of preceding full-season winter crops. Former studies indicated that late sowing usually resulted in reduced yield and declined fiber quality (Bauer et al, 2000;Bange and Milory, 2004;Davidonis et al, 2004;Dong et al, 2006). The changed yield and fiber quality were due to suboptimal weather conditions in late sowing date (Gormus and Yucel, 2002).…”

“…Vegetative growth and plant biomass were decreased under K deficient 577 Gormus et al conditions (Kerby & Adams, 1985), because potassium plays an important role in photosynthesis, accumulation and allocation of carbohydrates (Reddy & Zhao, 2005). Micronaire is linearly related to the sufficient amount of carbohydrate supply for developing bolls provided by canopy photosynthesis (Bauer et al, 2000).…”
