Candidate materials and technologies for integrated optics: fast and efficient electro-optic modulation

Abstract: This review discusses the linear electro-optic effect and how it is used in the fabrication of light modulators in a variety of different material systems. Lithium niobate is chosen as the foremost example of a suitable material since it currently forms the base for the most mature technology, although newer research on semiconductors and electro-optic polymers is also addressed. The fundamentals of modulator design which lead to the possibility of fast and efficient modulation are covered, as are some of the … Show more

“…Signal-controlled “smart” materials also include functional polymers. Functional polymers of controlled refractivity, photochromic, electrochromic, and optoelectronic functions were developed recently. The use of polymers with tunable refractive properties as optical modulators, optical filters, or electrooptic waveguide devices has been reported .…”

“…Lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) crystal has been studied for many decades, as it has very excellent nonlinear optical properties and electro-optic effects [1,2]. The basic properties of LiNbO 3 are fundamental and crucial to its wide applications in nonlinear optics and integrated optics [3].…”

“…1 The main problem with these materials is that they need very high applied field, optical or electrical, in order to induce significant changes of the refractive index. Liquid crystals (LC) have effective electroand nonlinear optical coefficients that are orders of magnitude larger than other integrated optical materials.…”
