User interaction (UI) logs are high-resolution event logs that record low-level activities performed by a user during the execution of a task in an information system. Each event in a UI log corresponds to a single interaction between the user and the interface, such as clicking a button or entering a string into a text field. UI logs are used for purposes like task mining or robotic process automation (RPA), but each study and tool relies on a different conceptualization and implementation of the elements and attributes that constitute user interactions. This lack of standardization makes it difficult to integrate UI logs from different sources and to combine tools for UI data collection with downstream analytics or automation solutions. To address this, we propose a universally applicable reference data model for process-related UI logs. Based on a review of scientific literature and industry solutions, this model includes the core attributes of UI logs, but remains flexible with regard to the scope, level of abstraction, and case notion. We provide an implementation of the model as an extension to the XES interchange standard for event logs and demonstrate its practical applicability in a real-life RPA scenario.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is a recent technology that has recently become increasingly adopted by companies as a solution for employees to focus on higher complexity and more valuable tasks while delegating routine, monotonous and rule-based tasks to their digital colleagues. The increased interest, reflected in the increasing number of articles regarding approaches and test cases, has triggered the necessity for a summary that could extract the more generalisable ideas and concepts about these software robots. This paper used a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to find and synthesise information from articles obtained on this subject. This research identified the most general implementation approaches of successful RPA adoption cases, observed benefits, challenges commonly faced by organisations, characteristics that make processes more suitable for RPA, and research gaps in the current literature. The findings presented in this paper have two purposes. The first is to provide a way for companies and organisations to become more familiar with good practices regarding the adoption of robotic process automation. The second is to foster further research on the subject by complementing the current knowledge and proposing new paths for research.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is a rapid-emerging technology for process automation that is using software robots to replicate high-volume, manual, repeatable, routine, rule-based, and unmotivating human tasks. The goal is not to replace human workers but to allow them focus more on difficult tasks by delegating their tedious routine tasks to a digital force. RPA tools demonstrated powerful cost-saving and other performances. Nevertheless, one of the main challenges of implementing RPA is the identification of the suitable tasks for automation. Process mining is as an emerging technology for process discovery and enhancement based on event log data. Since RPA operates on the user interface level; process mining techniques can play a huge role in deciding the tasks that can be automated. However, process mining requires an event log as input to be used. This paper presents a tool responsible for recording the interactions with user interfaces and generating a UI log that can be used by process mining techniques for deciding the tasks that can be automated with RPA.
