Cancer vs. SARS-CoV-2 induced inflammation, overlapping functions, and pharmacological targeting

Abstract: Inflammation is an intrinsic defence mechanism triggered by the immune system against infection or injury. Chronic inflammation allows the host to recover or adapt through cellular and humoral responses, whereas acute inflammation leads to cytokine storms resulting in tissue damage. In this review, we present the overlapping outcomes of cancer inflammation with virus-induced inflammation. The study emphasises how anti-inflammatory drugs that work against cancer inflammation may work against the inflammation ca… Show more

“…Our patient had no trauma or any other health problem other than the recent COVID-19 infection. COVID-19 and malignant diseases lead to overlapping inflammatory reactions at many points [ 16 ]. Although we do not have data to show the relationship between them, we think that studies on this subject are needed.…”

“…Immunosuppression caused by anti-cancer therapy increases the risk of COVID-19 infection and increases the susceptibility of cancer patients to severe COVID-19 (Seth et al 2020 ). Cancers lead to inflammation and the formation of a tumour-associated immune microenvironment (Meng et al 2020 ), which may interact with the inflammatory responses to COVID-19 (Amere Subbarao 2021 ). Such overlapping outcomes may affect the treatment of patients with LUAD with comorbid COVID-19 for inflammation-related complications caused by COVID-19 or anti-tumour therapy (Yang et al 2020b ; Mohamed Khosroshahi et al 2021 ).…”

“…Constantini et al employed untargeted metabolomics, analyzing blood plasma, to Cancer and COVID-19 share some inflammatory characteristics. A notable feature is the elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, termed a "cytokine storm", that has the potential to trigger multiple organ failure [78]. Understanding the main cytokine networks involved in this process represents a promising strategy for blocking the cytokine storm.…”
